Elmira, PA – Trailing 13-8 with 5:16 to play, Marywood University scored four unanswered goals in four minutes but were unable to find the equalizer as the Pacers dropped a 13-12 decision to Elmira College in a non-conference women's lacrosse game played at Elmira Free Academy on Sunday. With the win, the Soaring Eagles improve to 2-1 on the season while the Pacers see their record drop to 2-2.
Elmira would score the first three goals of Sunday afternoon's contest before Taylor McKeown (Nashua, NH) got the Pacers on the board with 21:28 to play in the opening half. The Soaring Eagles would extend their lead to 5-1 at the 13:47 mark, but goals by McKeown and Allie Sodl (Coplay, PA) cut Marywood's deficit to 5-3 going into halftime.
Following the intermission, Jennifer Silvestri (Warwick, NY) and Sarah Collins (Brooklyn, NY) found the back of the net for the Pacers to knot the game at 5-5 with 27:25 to play. However, Elmira responded with seven unanswered goals over the next 10 and a half minutes to build a 12-5 lead. Kelly Kuzicki (Vernon, NJ) sandwiched a pair of goals around McKeown's third goal of the game to cut the Pacers deficit to 12-8 with 11:09 to play.
Emma Schepers scored an unassisted goal with 5:16 to play to give the Soaring Eagles a five-goal cushion. Sodl would score three goals, and Kelly Kryspin (Hopatcong, NJ) added one, over the next four-plus minutes of game time to bring Marywood within a goal at 13-12 with 1:06 to play, but the Pacers were unable to net the equalizer in dropping their second straight contest.
Elmira, who got three goals apiece from Sarah Ware and Jordan Donegan, finished the game with a 38-20 advantage in shots for the game and a 26-19 edge in groundballs. Mary Kate Gellerman made five saves in the Soaring Eagles' cage to pick up the win.
Sodl finished the game with four goals and McKeown added three goals and one assist to lead the Pacers, who got 15 saves from goalie Katie Sullivan (Merrick, NY) in the loss.
Marywood will open conference play on Tuesday when they travel to Aston, PA to take on Neumann University in a Colonial States Athletic Conference game scheduled to begin at 4:00 p.m.
