Box Score

Scranton, PA - King's College committed five errors on the day but the Monarchs also got a strong pitching performance from starter Pat Matthews and King's earned a hard-fought 3-2 win over host Marywood Sunday afternoon in Scranton.  With the non-conference win King's improves to 7-2 on the year while Marywood slips to 3-10.

The visitors grabbed a 1-0 lead in the top of the third when Chris Sweeney singled to left field to score Denis Rice.  Marywood would respond with a two-run third of their own, but both Marywood runs were unearned as errors plagued the Monarchs in the inning.  After a Jason Bugno (Clarks Summit, PA) single, Mike Castellano (Brooklyn, NY) reached on an error which allowed Bugno to move to second.  Josh Plisko (Moosic, PA) then reached on an error after a bunt which allowed Bugno to score from second.  Then, on a wild pitch, Castellano would cross the plate to put Marywood up 2-1.

The score would remain that way until King's batted in the fifth.  A Mike Kusters one-out single to left gave the Monarchs their first runner of the inning, and Brian Mikus singled to right to give them runners on first and second.  A Rice single would load the bases, and a fielder's choice RBI by Joey Troxell would tie the game at 2-2.

The score would remain that way until the ninth thanks to solid pitching from King's starter Pat Matthews and Marywood pitchers Mike Siciliano and Alex Magid.  Matthews performed brilliantly on the mound despite five errors from the Monarch defense.  Matthews went 8.1 innings and allowed just four hits while striking out seven.  Sicialiano (Whippany Park, NJ) went seven strong for Marywood, allowing two runs while striking out four.  Magid pitched two in relief for Marywood, allowing three hits.

But in the top of the ninth, Monarch first baseman Eric Matula doubled down the right field line to start the inningand would score on a Kusters RBI single to right.  From there, Monarch closer Brenton Eades shut the door, getting the final two outs of the ninth with a runner on second to secure the King's win.

Kusters finished the day 4-5 for the Monarchs with and RBI.  Matula was 1-4 and had the lone extra base hit of the day with the ninth inning double.  Castellano finished 2-4 for Marywood.

The Pacers return to action Tuesday when they host Alvernia College at 3:30 pm in a non-conference single game.
