Scranton, PA – William Roerden scored the 100th point of his career and finished with four points to lead Marywood to a 10-5 win over Neumann University in the Colonial States Athletic Conference opener for both teams on Saturday afternoon. The Pacers, who also got a four-point effort from Jamie Beagan, improve to 6-1 overall and 1-0 in conference play while the Knights fall to 1-6 on the year and 0-1 in the CSAC.
Marywood got goals from four different players to take a 4-0 lead after the first quarter. Roerden (Warwick, NY) scored off an assist from Beagan (Patchogue, NY) with the Pacers a man-up at the 9:03 mark to open the scoring. Gregory Nester (Morgantown, PA) and George Downey IV (Palmyra, PA) would each score unassisted goals before Nick Parks (Emmaus, PA) scored off a Roerden assist with 2:11 to play in the opening stanza. Roerden's helper gave the junior the 100th point of his career, joining Parks as the only members of the young program's 100-point club.
The Pacers special teams stepped up again in the second quarter as Parks scored the only goal of the period with Marywood shorthanded at the 4:21 mark. The Pacers would hold a 5-0 halftime lead after out-shooting Neumann 21-12 in the first 30 minutes of play.
Anthony Tuscai (West Chester, PA) took a feed from Parks and scored with 9:49 to play in the third quarter to stretch the host's advantage to 6-0 before the Knights got on the board when Mike Pantelone scored with 6:12 remaining in the period. Beagen and Roerden would score goals separated by 35 seconds to give Marywood an 8-1 lead heading into the final 15 minutes of play.
Brian Roerden (Warwick, NY) and Tuscai scored in the first three minutes of the fourth quarter to give Marywood a commanding 10-1 lead. Neumann scored the final four goals of the game, but it was too late for the Knights, who got four goals from Pantelone in the contest.
Marywood held a 45-26 shot advantage while claiming 45 groundballs to the Knights 35. In a physical contest in which the two teams combined for 23 penalties, the Pacers scored three goals on eight extra-man opportunities while holding the Knights to two late man-up goals on eleven opportunities.
Roerden finished with four points on two goals and two assists while Beagen notched four points as well with a goal and three helpers to lead Marywood, who got 15 saves from Jesse Habich (Broomall, PA) in the win.
Marywood returns to action on Wednesday when they visit Immaculata University for a CSAC match-up scheduled to face-off at 6:00 p.m.
