Royals Take 2010 Opener From Pacers

Scranton, PA - Host University of Scranton out-shot visiting Marywood University 27-3 and scored two first half goals in route to a 3-0 win in the season opener for both squads Wednesday afternoon at the University of Scranton's Fitzpatrick field.  Marywood keeper Jamie Bowman made 17 saves in goal.

Scranton jumped out to a 1-0 lead at the 12:58 mark of the first half when Julie Ozycz tipped in a pass from Laura Megargel from eight yards out.  The Royals doubled their lead to 2-0 with just over a minute left before halftime wehn Kaitlyn Tirney stole a pass at midfield and beat Bowman (Cheshire, CT) one on one for her first goal of the season.

The Royals (1-0) put the game out of reach with another insurance goal as Tirney picked up an assist at the 59:07 mark when Tara Winter beat the Pacers' defense from 10-yards out. 

Nicole Wesser (Hamburg, PA) picked up a defensive save for the Pacers while Bowman stopped 17 shots on the day.  Scranton keeper Alexandria Marandino made three saves to preserve the shutout win.

Marywood returns to action Saturday when they visit Moravian College in Bethlehem for a 1:00 pm non-conference game.
