Scranton, PA – Ryan Jones scored a spectacular first half goal and Marywood's defense and goalkeeper Shane Quinn recorded the team's fourth-consecutive shutout as the Pacers topped King's College 1-0 in non-conference men's soccer action on Tuesday night. Marywood improves to 5-1 on the season with the victory while the Monarchs fall to 4-2.
The Pacers nearly took the in the 5th minute of Tuesday night's game, but Christian Lawlor (Hillsdale, NJ) saw his shot from close range denied by a fine save by King's goalkeeper Andrew O'Shura, who made another nice save off a long distance shot by Jones (Holland, PA) just under four minutes later.
Marywood would finally solve O'Shura in the 22nd minute. Sean O'Day (Edwardsville, PA) took a long throw-in that King's was able to clear to the top of the 18-yard box where Jones ran onto it and ripped a one-time volley into the upper-90 to give the Pacers the lead.
Quinn (Clarks Summit, PA) helped Marywood maintain the 1-0 lead into halftime by tipping a tough shot by King's Kevin Moulton over the bar in the 34th minute. Both teams had several good looks in the second half, but Quinn and the Pacers' defense stood tall to earn their fourth-straight shutout, setting a team record for consecutive minutes played without yielding a goal.
Marywood held a 12-7 advantage in shots fro the game while King's had a 7-6 edge in corner kicks.
Quinn finished the game with three saves to earn his fifth win of the season while O'Shura made four saves for the Monarchs.
Marywood returns to action on Saturday when they travel to Brooklyn, NY to take on Polytechnic University in a non-conference game scheduled to kick-off at 2:00 p.m. at Aviator Sports Complex.
