Scranton, PA - Siobhan Blancaflor picked up her team leading third goal of the season just over a minute into the second half off an assist from Erin Jones and Marywood held off a short-handed Gwynedd-Mercy team to open CSAC play with a 1-0 win over the Griffins Tuesday afternoon in Scranton.  Marywood moves to 4-2-1 overall while the Griffins, who played nearly 75 minutes a man-down due to a red card, slip to 2-5-1 (0-1 CSAC).

After a back and forth opening ten minutes, a red card was issued to a Gwynedd-Mercy player at the 13:20 mark and forced the Griffins to play a man down the remainder of the game.  Despite playing with nine field players, GMC still got several good looks at the goal in each half.

The Griffin defense kept the Pacers off the board in the first half, but a series of one-time passes nearly two minutes into the second half resulted in Blancaflor's game-winner.  Emma Nye (Keene, NY) checked back to receive a ball in the midfield and laid a one-time pass to Erin Jones (Vestal, NY) on the right flank.  Jones one-timed the ball into a streaking Blancaflor (Haddam, CT) who promptly deposited the ball past GMC keeper Kristie Pollock.

From there, the Marywood defense picked up its second consecutive shutout thanks to several nice saves from goalkeeper Meghan Coyle (Endicott, NY) and strong play by backs Shannon Hresko (Gibbstown, NJ), Andrea Barker (Binghamton, NY), Paige Madary (Royersford, PA) and Lacey Habicht (Woodcliff Lake, NJ).  Coyle stoned GMC forward Gwen Conte with about six minutes remaining at the top of the 18-yard box to prevent a breakaway game-tying goal.

Marywood, who out-shot the Griffins 14-6 on the day, returns to action Saturday against defending CSAC Champion Cabrini College.  Kick-off in Radnor is set for 1:30 pm .
