Box Score
Scranton, PA – Marywood University got goals from Ryan Jones and Christian Lawlor and held off a late comeback bid by Centenary College to pick up a 2-1 win in a Colonial States Athletic Conference game on Wednesday night. With the victory, the Pacers improve to 7-3 overall and 2-0 in conference play while the Cyclones record slips to 3-6 on the season and 0-1 in the CSAC.
Marywood took a 1-0 lead in the 14th minute by taking advantage of a set-piece 22 yards from goal. Lee Powers (Mill Hall, PA) played a short square ball that Jones (Holland, PA) ran onto and blasted past Centenary goalkeeper Jason Rogers to give the Pacers the early lead. Marywood would hold the slim, one-goal lead at halftime despite out-shooting the Cyclones 12-5 in the opening half.
The Pacers would add a much-needed insurance goal in the 65th minute. Sean O'Day (Edwardsville, PA) took a long-throw in deep in Centenary's defensive end that Brett Megee (Easton, PA) flicked on to Lawlor (Hillsdale, NJ), who finished from close range on a volley for his fourth goal of the season.
The Cyclones would not go down without a fight and Matt Winkler headed home a long-throw-in by Patrick Bourland in the 80th minute to cut the visitors deficit to 2-1. Centenary nearly equalized in the 87th minute, but Marywood goalkeeper Shane Quinn (Clarks Summit, PA) made a fine save to deny a bending, long-range strike by Centenary's Daniel Berniz to keep the Pacers in front.
Marywood held a 22-11 advantage in shots for the game while Centenary claimed the only three corner kicks of the game. Quinn made five saves to earn his seventh win of the season while Rogers made 10 stops in a losing effort.
The Pacers will next host Berkeley College on Saturday evening at 7:00 p.m. in a non-conference game that will cap off Homecoming and Family Weekend festivities.
