Scranton, PA – Marywood University women's basketball team closed out its five-game home stand with a 74-43 victory over Cedar Crest College in Colonial States Athletic Conference action on Thursday evening. The Pacers locked-up their fifth-straight double-digit win season while improving to 10-4 on the season and 4-1 in conference play.
Mariah Schaeffer (Bainbridge, NY) scored the first six points of Thursday night's game as Marywood would build a 14-3 lead over the first 7:05 of the contest. Cedar Crest then got four straight points from Leann Wallower to cut the Pacers' lead to 14-7, but Marywood went on a 10-3 run to lead 24-10 with 5:38 left in the half. The Falcons chipped away at Marywood's advantage the rest of the half, but the hosts would lead 29-20 at halftime.
Schaeffer's eight first half points led Marywood, who shot 37.9 percent from the field in the first half. The Pacers limited Cedar Crest to 22.2 percent shooting in the first half. Lizzy Sunderhaus had eight points in the opening 20 minutes of play to lead the visitors.
Leading by nine at the start of the second half, Marywood opened the period with a 15-0 run in the first 5:12 of the stanza to put the game out of reach and hold a commanding 44-20 lead with 14:48 to play. The Pacers limited Cedar Crest to just four points over the first 9:52 of the period and 13 of 14 Marywood players registered points as the team notched its fourth-straight win.
Schaeffer and Marielle Thorsen (Belvidere, NJ) each had 12 points to lead the Pacers. Schaeffer added a game-high six assists and six rebounds while Thorsen added a game-high seven steals. Allison Bruet (Binghamton, NY) was the third Marywood player in double-figures after finishing with 11 points after shooting 4-5 from the floor and 2-4 from the free throw line. Overall, the Pacers shot 44.4 percent from the field including and knocked down 7 of 13 shots from three-point range.
Sunderhaus finished the evening with an impressive double-double, scoring a game-high 27 points and leading all rebounders with 16 boards. The junior center went 9-18 from the floor and a perfect 8-8 from the free throw line. Cedar Crest, who fell to 4-7 overall (0-5 CSAC) with the loss, shot 27.5 percent from the field, 25 percent from beyond the arc, and 70.6 percent from the charity stripe.
Marywood returns to action next Thursday when they visit Centenary College in a CSAC game slated to tip-off at 6:00 p.m. in Hackettstown, NJ.
