Scranton, PA – Marywood University built an 18-point halftime lead and cruised to a 58-38 victory over visiting Arcadia University in a non-conference women's basketball game on Thursday evening. The Pacers notched their second-straight win to improve to 8-4 on the season while the Knights fall to 5-6.
Holding a 5-4 lead with 14:22 to play in the first half, Marywood went on a 10-1 run over the next four and a half minutes to hold a 10-point advantage with 9:43 left in the opening period after a lay-up by Lauren Rogan (Archbald, PA). Back to back lay-ups by Arcadia's Jackie Law saw the visitors draw to within six points at 15-9 with 8:18 showing on the clock, but the Pacers responded by outscoring the visitors 18-6 to end the half and hold a 33-15 lead at the intermission.
A balanced Marywood offense was led by Marielle Thorsen's (Belvidere, NJ) six points. Jillian Flanagan (Monroe, NY) netted five first half points while five Pacers each had four points in the opening 20 minutes of play as Marywood shot 44.1 percent from the field in the first half while limiting the Knights to just 17.9 percent shooting from the field in the opening period.
Marywood stretched their lead to as many as 22 points in the second half and led 46-24 with 10:47 to play on a Carly Leitzel (Manheim, PA) lay-up, but Arcadia would not go down without trying to make things interesting, clawing their way back to within 14 points at 51-38 on a Krista Hsu bucket with 3:26 to play. That was as close as the Knights would come on the evening as Marywood pulled away with the 20-point victory.
Thorsen and Leitzel each had 12 points to lead Marywood with Thorsen adding a team-high eight rebounds. Allison Bruet (Binghamton, NY) was the third Pacer in double-digits with 10 points to go along with six-assists which tied for a game-high. The Pacers shot 35.5 percent from the field for the game, 36.4 percent from three-point range, and 62.5 percent from the free throw line.
Law paced Arcadia with a double-double on game-highs of 13 points and 11 rebounds. Angie Adams finished in double-figures for the Knights as well with 10 points to go along with six assists. The Pacers limited Arcadia to a 25.9 percent effort from the floor and just two three-pointers on 16 attempts.
Marywood returns to the hardwood on Monday evening when they play host to Cabrini College in a Colonial States Athletic Conference contest scheduled to start at 6:00 p.m. in the Insalaco Arena, the front-end of a doubleheader to be followed by a men's game between the two schools.
