GMC Tops Pacers in Battle of CSAC Unbeatens

Gwynedd Valley, PA – Host Gwynedd-Mercy College clinched the #1 seed in the upcoming Colonial States Athletic Conference playoffs with a close 5-4 win over visiting Marywood University Sunday afternoon in Gwynedd Valley.  Both teams entered the contest with unblemished CSAC records, but GMC won four of six singles matches to remain unbeaten on the year, improving to 12-0 overall and 9-0 in CSAC play.  Marywood fell to 7-2 overall and now stand at 7-1 in the CSAC.

The Pacers took an early 2-1 lead after doubles play with wins from their two and three doubles teams.  After GMC's Rachel Fein and Jessica Scarpello got an 8-1 win at one-doubles, Marywood responded with an 8-5 win from Kara Hoff and Megan Nastelli at two-doubles and an 8-3 win from Lindsay Burke and Beth Schneider at three-doubles.

Fein would even the match at 2-2 with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Hoff in the top singles flight and the Griffins would go up 3-2 with a Scarpello win in the second singles flight as she defeated Carly Leitzel 6-2, 6-3.  Burke would even the match at 3-3 with a hard-fought, 7-6 (8-6), 6-3 win over Taylor Michener at three-singles, but Carolilne Lockwood put the hosts back up 4-3 with a win over Schneider at four-singles.

At five-singles, GMC's Chelsea Joens beat Nastelli 6-1, 6-3 to secure the decisive fifth point.  Melissa Hudock earned Marywood's last point with a 6-1, 6-3 win at six-singles.

The Pacers can clinch the #2 seed in the playoffs with wins in their final two CSAC matches against Neumann and Immaculata, but must first take on King's College in a non-league tilt set for Tuesday at 3:00 pm at Marywood.
