Pacers Roll Past Giants in CSAC Opener

Scranton, PA – Marywood University got 11 points apiece from Mariah Schaeffer and Marielle Thorsen and the Pacers' defense limited Keystone College to just nine second half points as Marywood won Monday evening's Colonial States Athletic Conference opener 59-22.  The Pacers notched their fourth-straight victory to improve to 4-1 on the season and 1-0 in conference play while the Giants remain winless in four games (0-1 CSAC).
 
Neither team was able their rhythm over the opening minutes of Monday night's contest and the score was tied at 6-6 after the first 5:10 of play before Tiana Cuttino put Keystone ahead with a jumper at the 14:14 mark of the first half.  After coming out of the gate slowly, Marywood responded with an 11-2 run to lead 17-8 with 8:26 to play in the opening half after Maggie Presnal converted a layup.
 
After Chantel Blake halted the Pacers run with a pair of free throws, Marywood outscored the Giants 13-3 to close the half and hold a 30-13 lead at the break as the Pacers shot 33.3 percent from the floor including making good on three of five three-point attempts.  Thorsen led all players with seven points in the first half while Allison Bruet netted six points and grabbed five boards as the Pacers held a 24-15 advantage in rebounds in the opening 20 minutes of play while limiting Keystone to just three first-half field goals.
 
Marywood stretched their lead to 22 points at 40-18 at the 16:43 mark of the second half when Bruet drained a pair of free throws, and the Pacers outscored Keystone 19-3 the rest of the way as a stifling defense limited the Giants to just nine second half points including just three in the final 17:06. 
 
Marywood shot 35.8 percent from the field for the game and converted seven of 14 three-point attempts for the game while being led by 11 points apiece from Schaeffer and Thorsen.  Schaeffer moved into ninth place in Marywood's all-time scoring list after her performance while Bruet led all players with seven rebounds and Thorsen finished with six boards as the Pacers finished with a 42-37 advantage on the glass.  Carly Leitzel recorded a game-high five steals while Bruet finished with four takeaways and Alysa Mayo blocked a pair of shots for the hosts.
 
Keystone, who was limited to just six field goals in the game and three treys, was paced by Alyssa Cuomo's nine points and Alexis Jones's five rebounds.
 
Marywood will next make the short trip across town to take on the University of Scranton on Wednesday in a non-conference battle scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
