Box Score

Scranton, PA - Visiting Misericordia University hit nearly 60% of their shots from the floor, including a 57% clip from behind the arc and nearly a 90% mark from the charity stripe, as the Cougars topped host Marywood 75-57 in non-conference men's basketball action Monday afternoon at Marywood's Insalaco Arena.  Misericordia, now 8-3 on the year, had edged the Pacers (4-6) 62-60 in the Championship game of the Laurel Line tournament in November.

Misericordia built a nine-point halftime lead after connecting on 7 of 11 attempts from long-range including a 2-for-4 effort from Jeff Slanovec, who had 11 points at the break.  A tight affair in the early stages, the score was knotted at 16-16 with just 8:27 to go in the first half.  That is when the Cougars got hot, using a 7-0 run over the next 2:30 to build a 23-16 lead.  After a Pacers' free-throw, the Cougars went up nine on a three from Slanovec and eventually went up by as many as 13 (33-20) before the Pacers got it back down to single digits before the first half buzzer sounded.

Misericordia out-scored Marywood 12-4 in the paint in the opening half and the Cougars' bench out-scored Marywood's 12-3.

Marywood would cut the Cougars' lead to seven to open the second half, but Misericorida remained hot from the floor and continued to keep Marywood at bay, extending their lead to 20 points with 4:23 left.  Again the Cougars dominated in the paint, holding a 20-8 advantage during the second half while Misericordia's bench once again contributed by out-scoring Marywood's 18-8.

Misericordia placed three players in double figures led by Justin Grotevant's 18 points on 6 of 9 shooting. Grotevant was also 5-for-5 from the charity stripe while the Cougars as a team made 15 of 17 free throw attempts on the afternoon.  Joe Busacca had 15 points in 15 minutes of action coming off the bench for the Cougars, while Slanovec finished with 13 points.

Matt Lepri and Tyrone Baker each had 11 for Marywood.  The Pacers return to the hardwood on January 2 when they host the Cross County Challenge.  In opening day action, Marywood will take on Kings at 8:00 pm after Wilkes plays Scranton at 6:00 pm.  On January 3, Marywood will play Wilkes at 6:00 pm before the Royals and Monarchs face off at 8:00 pm.  All games are at Marywood's Insalaco Arena.
