Edwardsville, PA – Marywood University first baseman Thomas Czerw homered twice in his first two at-bats but host Wilkes University rallied early on then held Marywood off for an 8-5 non-conference win over the Pacers Wednesday afternoon at Artillery Park in Edwardsville. Marywood dropped to 6-3 with the loss while the hosts improved to 5-4.

After Nicholas Pasqualichio singled in the first and stole second, Czerw blasted a two-run shot with two outs to put the visitors up, 2-0. Carmen Lopresto cut the Wilkes deficit in half on their first at-bat, answering Czerw with a solo shot of his own. The hosts then used a walk, three hits and a Marywood error to plate two more runs in the bottom half of the first to take a 3-2 lead into the second.

A scoreless second didn't stop the offense for long, as Marywood tied the game in the third when Joe Diskin scored on an error. The score would remain knotted at 3-3 until the Colonels plated three runs in the fifth. Lopresto picked up his second and third RBIs of the game with a two-run double and would later score on a Matt Ruch sacrifice fly to center.

Marywood cut the Wilkes lead to 6-5 in the top of the sixth as Czerw picked up his second homer of the game with a solo blast and David Maione picked up and RBI double for the Pacers. That one-run deficit didn't last long, however, as the Colonels answered with two runs of their own in the bottom of the sixth to reclaim a 8-5 lead, which would also prove to be the final score.

Marywood loaded the bases in the top of the ninth but the Pacers' rally attempt ended on a fielder's choice groundout at second.

Alex Magid (0-2) picked up the loss on the mound for Marywood. Rick Clifford allowed the final two Marywood runs before Josh Plisko pitched the final two innings for Marywood without surrendering a run.

Czerw finished the afternoon 3-for-5 at the plate with two homers, three RBI and three runs scored while Maione was 3-for-4 with one RBI.

Marywood returns to the field Saturday as the Pacers open Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) play against Neumann University. The Pacers will take on the Knights in a doubleheader in Scranton with the first pitch of game one scheduled for 12:00 noon.
