Scranton, PA – Tim Freda allowed just three hits and one run in the opener and Ryan Pelle held off a late Neumann rally in the nightcap as Marywood opened the 2011 CSAC baseball season with a pair of wins over Neumann University Saturday afternoon in Scranton. Both Freda and Pelle improved to 3-0 on the mound while helping the Pacers to an 8-3 (2-0 CSAC) overall record. Neumann, who entered the twinbill with just one loss and who had received votes in the latest national rankings, fell to 10-3 and 0-2 CSAC.

Pelle was masterful in the opener, striking out three while only facing 24 batters on the day. The junior hurler allowed just one Neumann run which came in the third inning of play. After the Knights singled to open the inning and moved that runner to second with a sacrifice bunt, Nick Martin singled to left to score the game's first run.

Marywood quickly responded in the bottom half of the third; scoring all the runs they would need to secure the win. David Maione singled to short and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt from Joseph Valvano. Joe Diskin would then single to right to move Maione to third. Diskin would move to second on a catcher's indifference, and both Diskin and Maione would score when Nicholas Pasqualichio singled to second. Pasqualichio's deep single easily scored Maione and Diskin used his speed to beat a tag at the plate.

From there, Freda and the Pacers' defense held their ground to preserve the win. Diskin, Pasqualichio, Thomas Czerw, Jonathan Woytach and Maione accounted for Marywood's five hits in the opener, all singles. Freda now stands at 3-0 on the year with a 0.43 ERA with three complete games.

Marywood fell behind early in the nightcap as Mattieu Vallieres homered in his first two at-bats to put the Knights up 2-0 in the early going. The Pacers then used a big third inning, collecting eight runs on six hits to take an 8-3 lead.

The visitors battled back with another run in the fourth and then made the game very interested by scoring four times in the seventh. But, with the bases loaded and two outs, Pelle got Neumann's leadoff hitter to fly out to center to preserve the 8-7 win.

Jared Yaniello was 4-for-4 at the plate for Marywood with one RBI while Diskin and Maione each had two hits. Pasqualichio and Maine each doubled for Marywood. Pelle allowed five earned runs on 14 hits over seven complete innings. Mike Dicken took the loss for the Knights.

Marywood and Neumann will complete their regular season series tomorrow in Aston with a single nine inning game. First pitch is slated for 12:00 pm. Those unable to travel to Neumann can watch the action online by following the Live Stats link below.
