Pacers Move to 4-3 with Tight Win Over MSMC

Newburgh, NY – Marywood University fell behind 2-1 after doubles play but battled back to win four of six singles matches to claim a close 5-4 win over host Mount Saint Mary College Sunday afternoon in non-conference men's tennis action. Daniel Pfafman's 6-0, 7-6 (7-5) win at three-singles play got Marywood the win as the Pacers improve to 4-3 on the year. The Blue Knights fell to 2-4 with the loss.

Marywood's Greg Chilson and Todd Doran put the Pacers up 1-0 with an 8-3 win at one-doubles, but the Knights battled back and won at two and three doubles by scores of 8-4 and 8-5, respectively, to take a one-point lead heading into singles play.

Doran evened the match at 2-2 with a 6-4 win at two-singles after his opponent was forced to retire early in the second set, and Chilson put the Pacers up 3-2 with a with a 6-0, 6-3 win over Mike McNicholas in the top singles flight. Nathaniel Alhberg and Zach Conlon got wins for Mt. St. Mary College to give the Knights four points, while Wyatt Nolan won for Marywood at five singles to even the match.

Pfafman then took an easy opening set from Stat Willand by a score of 6-0 before closing out the winning point with a 7-6 (7-5) tiebreaker win.

Marywood returns to the courts next Saturday when they open up the defense of their 2010 CSAC Championship with a 1:00 pm match against conference foe Cabrini College.
