Radnor, PA – After Marywood University took an early lead in Wednesday afternoon's Colonial States Athletic Conference men's lacrosse game, Cabrini College used an eight-goal run on their way to a 12-4 victory. The Cavaliers, who have won ten-straight conference titles, improve to 9-5 on the season and now sit alone atop the CSAC standings with a 5-0 mark in conference play while the Pacers' record moves to 9-5 overall and 4-1 in the CSAC.
Gregory Nester gave Marywood an early lead by scoring unassisted just 25 seconds into Wednesday's game, but Brian Hill leveled the score at one-apiece with 4:47 to play in the opening period. Jeff Crosby's goal just over a minute later put the Cavaliers ahead and Bobby Thorp gave the hosts a 3-1 lead at the end of the first quarter with a goal at the 1:20 mark.
Cabrini got second quarter goals from Hill, Paul Skulski, Matt Biegel, and Corey Elmer to hold a 7-1 lead at halftime. Thorp's second tally of the afternoon 50 seconds into the third period stretched the Cavalier lead to 8-1 before Marcus Janda ended Cabrini's run by scoring off of a Nick Johnson assist with Marywood a man-down. Janda's goal was his 20th of the season and the junior is the fourth Marywood player to score at least 20 goals this season.
John McSorely's marker with 1:12 showing on the clock gave Cabrini a 9-2 advantage heading into the final 15 minutes of the game, where George Downey IV netted his 23rd goal of the season at the 12:39 mark. Joe Arrell countered for Cabrini with 10:33 remaining, but Riley Dobel scored unassisted with 6:22 to play to cut Marywood's deficit to 10-4. Cabrini iced the win with a pair of goals in the final 2:20.
Cabrini, who was led by three-point games from Biegel and Skulski, held a 51-19 advantage in shots for the game and a 44-28 edge in groundballs. Goalie Erick Zarzecki made 10 saves on the afternoon to pick up the win.
Marywood goalie Jesse Habich made 14 saves in defeat while Downey led the Pacers with six groundballs while winning seven of his ten face-offs. Chris Vogel and Nick Stoud added two caused turnovers apiece to lead Marywood.
The Pacers will close out their regular season on Saturday when they travel to Winchester, Virginia to take on Shenandoah University in a CSAC tilt scheduled for 1:00 p.m. Marywood, who has already clinched their fourth-straight berth in the conference playoffs, can lock up the number two seed and home field advantage for the CSAC semifinals with a win over the Hornets.
