Neumann Sweeps Pacers in CSAC Regular Season Finale

Scranton, PA - Neumann University broke open a tie game with five runs in extra innings and then scored ten over the first three in the nightcap as the Knights swept a CSAC doubleheader from Marywood Saturday afternoon in softball action.  Neumann took the opener 6-1 in nine innings and won the second game, 10-6.  The Knights remain atop the CSAC standings with a 27-11 (20-2 CSAC) record while Marywood now stands at 19-13 (15-7 CSAC).

Tied 1-1 in extra innings, Neumann exploded for a five-run ninth to claim the opener, 6-1.  Despite out-hitting Neumann 8-7 in the game, the Knights finally got to the tired arm of Marywood starter Alexandra Stine.  Stine, who pitched 8 1/3 innings, struck out five and allowed just five hits all game before surrending four runs in the ninth.  Jaclyn Parsons pitched 2/3 of an inning in relief, allowing two runs on two hits.

Neumann's Rachel Purpurpo allowed just one run on nine hits and pitched a complete-game, striking out 11 without allowing a walk.  Kim Kirkpatrick was 2-for-3 a the plate with a double and four RBIs for the Knights while Talia Williams was 2-for-3 with Marywood's lone RBI.

In the nightcap, the Knights quickly jumped out to a 10-0 lead after the first three innings to secure their 20th conference win of the season.  Lauren Strack was 3-for-3 with a double and three RBI while Kirkpatrick (1-for-3) and Kelly Goslin (3-for-4) also had doubles.

Brittany Campbell got the win for Neumann after allowing one earned run on seven hits over six innings.  After starting the game and pitching four innings, Campbell returned to close the door on Marywood in the sixth and seventh. 

Ashley Dommes was 2-for-2 for Marywood with two RBI while Meghan Palmer was 3-for-4.  Kaitlyn Brennan was charged with the loss after allowing seven earned runs on 13 hits.

Marywood closes the 2011 regular season tomorrow with a non-conference doubleheader at Wilkes University at 1:00 pm.  The Pacers will then wait to see who they will face in opening round of CSAC playoffs on Wednesday.
