Reading, PA – Holding a 3-0 lead, Alvernia University used an eight-run third inning to break open Wednesday afternoon's non-conference baseball game in Reading. The Crusaders, who are currently ranked 19th in the nation, improve to 17-3 on the season after limiting the Pacers to just three hits. Marywood will take a 12-7 record into tomorrow afternoon's contest against the University of Scranton.
Alvernia took a 3-0 lead after the first inning with Reid Martin connecting for a two-run single and later scored on a Tim Ahlquist bask knock. The Crusaders would pound out seven hits and also got base runners on a pair of hit batsmen and a walk in their eight-run third inning. Alvernia added two more runs in the fifth inning and another in the sixth to account for the final score.
Chuck Nicholas went six innings on the mound to pick up the win for the Crusaders, allowing just singles by Marywood's Nicholas Pasqualichio, Mike Diskin, and Joseph Valvano and walking four. Rich Collins pitched three perfect innings to close out the game for Alvernia.
Alex Magid took the loss after giving up nine hits and two runs in two innings of work. The senior struck out one batter before being relieved by Josh Plisko who struck out two Crusaders and surrendering four hits in four innings on the Pacers' mound. Richard Bell threw the final two innings for Marywood and yielded just one hit.
The Pacers' game against cross-town rival Scranton is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. at Marywood.
