Scranton, PA – Jamie Beagen recorded five points, including the 100th of his collegiate career, to help lead Marywood University to a 15-8 victory over Centenary College in a Colonial States Athletic Conference battle on Wednesday afternoon. Marcus Janda had a game-high six points and George Downey IV also turned in a five-point effort as the Pacers improved to 7-3 on the season and 2-0 in conference play with their third-straight win.
Marywood used a big first quarter to take control of the Wednesday's game, leading 9-0 after 15 minutes of play had elapsed. Janda and Downey scored early goals separated by 15 seconds to give the Pacers a 2-0 lead with Beagen setting up Janda's tally and Nick Johnson assisting on Downey's goal. Joe LaBella, Roerden, and Nick Parks would stretch Marywood's lead to 6-0 with markers of their own before Jameson Roberts set up Anthony Tuscai for a finish with 3:40 to play in the opening quarter. Roerden and Parks tallied goals 32 seconds apart to give the hosts a nine-goal cushion.
Centenary scored the first four goals of the second quarter to climb to within 9-4 before Janda netted his second goal of the game with 1:45 to play in the second quarter to give Marywood a 10-4 lead at halftime.
The Cyclones' Joe Swantkoski completed his hat-trick off a Tom Montalvo assist with the visitors a man-up 15 seconds into the third quarter to cut Marywood's advantage to 10-5, but Downey responded with a man-down goal just 23 seconds later and Beagen stretched the Pacers' lead to six by converting a Parks' helper at the 6:13 mark. Swantkoski scored with 5:02 to play in the period, making the score 12-7 in Marywood's favor heading into the final 15 minutes of play.
Downey netted his fourth goal of the contest off of Beagen's fourth assist of the game 1:32 into the final period. With the helper, Beagen became just the third Marywood player to reach 100 points for his career, joining Parks and Roerden in the 100-point club.
Swantkoski scored his sixth goal of the game for Centenary with 10:58 to play to cut the Cyclone deficit to 13-8, but Janda and Brian Roerden tallied the final two goals of the match to give Marywood their third-consecutive victory.
Janda's six points game on three goals and three assists while Downey (4 goals, 1 assist) and Beagen (1 goal, 4 assists) both finished with five points. Parks (2 goals, 1 assist) and Roerden (1 goal, 2 assists) both added three points for Marywood, who held a 44-22 advantage in shots for the game and a 65-35 edge in groundballs.
Jesse Habich made five saves to earn his seventh victory of the season the Pacers' cage while counterpart Kyle McVay made 11 stops in the Centenary net while taking the loss.
Marywood won 21 of the games 26 face-offs, led by Downey, who went 13-15 on draws and collected a game-high 11 groundballs. Stephen Klepfer also went 7-10 on his face-offs as the Pacers were dominant in gaining possession off the draws.
Johnson and Roberts, who both picked up an assist on the afternoon, were strong on the defensive end as well, with both collecting a game-high five caused turnovers for Marywood.
The Pacers will travel to Aston, PA on Saturday to take in Neumann University in a CSAC contest scheduled to begin at 3:00 p.m.
