Scranton, PA – Sarah Dowhower scored with just 3:46 remaining in regulation to lift visiting Lebanon Valley College to a 2-1 victory over Marywood University in the second day of the Joe Bochicchio Memorial Classic on Sunday afternoon. The Dutchmen improve to 3-1 on the season with win while the Pacers see their record slip to 1-4.
Lebanon Valley opened the scoring 7:34 into Sunday's contest when Heather Tran scored on a deflected shot that got past Marywoood goalkeeper Emily Osborne with Stevi Laird and Allison Korns collecting assists on the play.
Marywood drew level at the 34:08 mark of the second half after Lacey Habicht played a corner kick in front of Lebanon Valley's goalmouth that eventually fell onto the foot of Olivia Habicht, who blasted home the equalizer from close range. The teams went into halftime tied at 1-1 with the Dutchmen holding a slim, 4-3 advantage in shots in the opening half.
The two teams traded chances through much of the second half and Siobhan Blancaflor appeared to give the Pacers a go-ahead goal with just under 20 minutes to play, but the referee's assistant ruled that the junior's hard-angled right-footed shot from the right sideline had gone over the endline before coming back into the field of play and into the net.
In the end, the Dutchmen were able to score the decisive goal in the 87th minute of play by making good of their only corner kick opportunity of the day. Laird served the corner into the mix where Dowhower headed in the game-winner from the middle of the box.
Lebanon Valley held a 13-8 advantage in shots for the game while Marywood had three corner kicks to the single one for the Dutchmen.
Becca Sykes made two saves to pick up the win in goal for Lebanon Valley while Osburne also made two stops for Marywood.
The Pacers open conference play next Saturday when they visit Gwynedd-Mercy College in a Colonial States Athletic Conference game scheduled to kickoff at 12:00 p.m. in Gwynedd Valley.
