Scranton, PA - The University of Scranton got a goal just over 14 minutes into the game from Christina Cognetti and the host Royals made it stand as they beat Marywood University 1-0 in non-conference women's soccer action Wednesday evening at Fitzpatrick Field.  The Royals, ranked eighth in the latest NSCAA Mid-Atlantic poll, took the first ever meeting between the cross-town schools to improve to 4-1-2 on the year while Marywood falls to 3-5.  Four of Marywood's five losses have come against either nationally or regionally ranked teams, and four of five have been by just one goal.

The Royals looked dangerous early, sneaking behind the Pacers' backline for several good looks at goal, but it was not until the 15th minute of play before the hosts would put one away.  Samantha Russo took a dangerous cross that skimmed across the goal mouth and dropped it to Cognetti who tapped it into an open goal from 10 yards out for her third goal of the season.

Despite several more chances, the Royals could not get another past Marywood keeper Emily Osborne, who finished the night with a game-high six saves.  The Pacers defense was also credited with one save after Angela Heydt cleared the ball off the goal line to prevent the hosts from adding an insurance goal.

Marywood's most dangerous chance came in the weining moments of the game as Alexis Hilliker, fresh off a two goal game against Philadelphia Biblical University on Tuesday, ripped a shot at Royals goalkeeper Kelsy McAnelly with less than three minutes remaining.

Marywood returns to CSAC action this Saturday when they face Neumann College at 1:00 pm in Aston.
