Marywood Women Fall to Scranton in Landmark Opener

Scranton, PA - Marywood University fell to crosstown rival University of Scranton Friday evening in both team's Landmark Conference swimming and diving opener.  The Royals earned 194 points to the Pacers' 100 as both teams opened the conference season Friday evening at Marywood's Aquatics Center.  Marywood's Katie Paterson won the 1000 free while the Pacers' 400 free relay team also won on the night.

Paterson opened the evening with a win for the Pacers in the 1000 free in a time of 11:10.63.  Amber Sharkey then finished in 2nd place in the 200 butterfly for Marywood, finishing in 2:30.33, just three seconds off the lead.  Katy Alexander and Heather Wimmer then finished second and third, respectively, in 1-meter diving for the Pacers.  Alexander posted a score of 145.10 while Wimmer earned a 140.70. 

Kayleigh Velott woudl finish second in the 200 backstroke in a time of 2:29.56 while Kim Petersen finished second in the 200 breaststroke.  Petersen touched in 2:42.92, less than a second behind the race winner.  Alyssa Desiderio was second in the 500 free in atime of 6:19.78 while Paterson finished second in the 100 butterfly in 1:06.67.  Sharkey finished third with a time of 1:07.80.

Alexander and Wimmer then closed out their diving nights with a second and third place finish in 3-meter diving as Alexander scored a 164.65 and Wimmer scored a 160.20. 

The Pacers closed out the meet in strong fashion with a win in the 400 free relay.  Petersen, Paterson, Velott and Valerie Barlow finished in first place with a time of 3:59.43.

Marywood returns to the pool tomorrow when they host Juniata College in Landmark action at 1:00pm.
