GMC Erupts Early, Late to Pull Away From Marywood

Scranton, PA - Visiting Gwynedd-Mercy College opened Monday's CSAC men's basketball game against host Marywood on a 15-2 run and then clamped down on the Pacers over the game's final 15 minutes to pull away with a 81-65 league win.  Marywood had five players in double figures led by Matt Tintle's game-high 22 points, but the Griffins used a hot shooting night (55%) to keep the Pacers at bay. GMC improved to 2-3, 1-0 CSAC with the win while Marywood slipped to 1-5, 0-2 CSAC.

The Griffins used three trey's in the opening five minutes of the game to build a 15-2 lead, but the Pacers slowly chipped away at the lead and out-scored GMC 15-3 over the next four minutes of play to get back to within three, 18-15, at the 11:52 mark.  The Pacers later tied the game at 21-21 but could never get the lead.

With the game tied at 24 apeice, GMC would out-score Marywood 12-0 over a five minute span to gain control back. The Griffins lead was eight at halftime (40-32) before Marywood closed to within one (46-45) on a  layup by Jonathan Velazquez with 16:09 to go.

After forcing the game's third tie on a three from Tintle (48-48), Gwynedd went on a 7-0 run to give itself some breathing room. From there, the Griffins held Marywood at bay and would not let the Pacers back within five points the rest of the way. 

For the game, Frank Champion led four Griffins in double figures with a team-high 14 points. Larry Jones III had 11 boards as did Tyler Barnes as the Griffins out-rebounded Marywood 45-24. The Griffins connected on 54.8% of their shots for the night and hit nearly 44% of their efforts from long-range (10 of 23). Marywood, meanwhile, hit only 37% of their efforts from the floor. 

Andrew Andrle added 11 points, while Shane Kellaher, Tyrone Baker and Velazquez each had 10 for Marywood.

The Pacers return to action Wednesday when they host Baptist Bible College at 8:00pm.
