Bruet Scores 1,000th Point as Marywood Advances to CSAC Semifinals Women's Basketball - 2/20/2012 8:13:00 PM Box Score Scranton, PA – Allison Bruet became the third Marywood University women's basketball player this season to score her 1,000th collegiate point in Monday evening's Colonial States Athletic Conference first round playoff game against Cabrini College to help lead the Pacers to a 68-60 victory over the Cavaliers. Marywood, who got 19 points from Marielle Thorsen and 18 from Mariah Schaeffer, advances to Wednesday's CSAC semifinals where they will take on top-seeded Gwynedd-Mercy College. With the score tied at 6-6 at the 14:24 mark of the first half of Monday night's contest, Marywood's Bruet knocked down a pair of free throws to spark a 5-0 run that put the hosts up 11-6 with 10:41 to play in the opening half. Bruet's first free throw gave the senior guard her 1,000th career point. Marywood, the fourth-seed in the CSAC tournament, stretched their advantage to 19-12 with 7:57 left on the clock on a layup by Bruet, but Cabrini rattled off the next six points to narrow their deficit to one point with 4:56 left in the period. The hosts stretched their lead back to four points on a Maggie Presnal lay-in, but the Cavaliers got a field goal from Brittany Sandone followed by a MaryKate McCann three pointer with 2:44 to play to take their first lead of the contest. Schaeffer and Presnal countered with field goals, but a McCann trey with 52 seconds left sent the game into halftime level at 26-apiece. The Pacers built a 38-32 lead over the first six minutes of the second half, but Cabrini used a 9-2 run to take a 41-40 lead with 10:25 to play. Marywood responded with seven unanswered points to lead 47-41 with 8:27 left on the clock. The Pacers stretched their lead to as many as eight points, but the Cavaliers battled back to within two points at 51-49 with just over four and a half minute left on the clock. Thorsen hit a big three-pointer on the Pacers next possession to spark a key, 8-0 run for Marywood that saw the hosts' lead swell to 59-49 with 1:35 remaining. Forced to foul and hope for Pacer misses from the charity stripe, Cabrini would come to within no closer than six points down the stretch as the Pacers avenged a 67-59 regular season defeat to the Cavaliers. Marywood, now 18-8 on the season, got a game-high 19 points from Thorsen, who also led all players with four steals. The Pacers also benefited from double-doubles from Schaeffer (18 points, 10 rebounds) and Presnal (12 and 10). Bruet, who became the 12th member of Marywood's 1,000 point club and the third to reach the milestone this season joining classmates Schaeffer and Thorsen, finished with seven points while dishing out a game-high three assists. The Cavaliers, who end their season with a 12-14 record, were paced by McCann's 19 points while Renee Deas and Colleen Stewart each netted 10 points in the defeat. Megan Decker pulled down a game-high 12 rebounds in the defeat for the Cavaliers, who held a 47-35 advantage on the glass for the contest. Marywood will travel to Gwynedd-Mercy on Wednesday night to take on the top-seeded Griffins at 7:00 p.m. in a CSAC semifinal. Third-seed Immaculata University, a 60-45 winner over Neumann University tonight, will visit second-seeded Baptist Bible in Wednesday's other semifinal match with the winners to meet Saturday for the CSAC Championship.Print Friendly Version
