Edwardsville, PA – Wilkes University used a three-run eighth inning to complete a come-from-behind win as the Colonels topped visiting Marywood University 10-9 in non-conference baseball action Tuesday afternoon at Wilkes' Artillery Park in Edwardsville.  The Colonels improved to 4-6 with the win while Marywood dropped to 5-5.

In the first, Marywood jumped out to a 3-0 lead when Shane Miller hit a three-run homer, his first of the year, to deep right field.  Miller's blast came after Jonathan Woytach singled with two outs and moved to third on a double by Nicholas Pasqualichio.  Wilkes answered with one run in the bottom half of the frame on a solo homer by Tyler Marino, but the Pacers came back with a two run second inning to grab an early 5-1 lead.  Wilkes again would respond, this time with a four-run bottom of the second highlighted by two doubles that resulted in three RBI to tie the game at 5-5.

The hosts would grab a 6-5 lead in the bottom of the third when Dan Pisanchyn tripled to center field and would score on a Stephen Ruch RBI single to right.  Ryan Pelle would enter to pitch for the Pacers to close down the Colonels the rest of the inning.  Pelle replaced Michael Ciavarella, who got the start and went 2.1 innings, allowing six runs (two earned) on seven hits.
The Pacers would reclaim the lead in the fourth.  After a routine grounder to start the inning, Mike Pinelli walked and promptly stole second to start the rally.  After a Mike Diskin single advanced Pinelli to third, Pinelli would score on Woytach's second RBI single of the afternoon.  Pasqualichio would then double again which would score Diskin and give the Pacers a 7-6 lead, and after Miller was hit by a pitch Woytach would score on an RBI single from Dan Downton to put Marywood up 8-6.

After Pelle sat the Colonels down in order in the bottom of the fourth, Wilkes countered by keeping the Pacers off the scoreboard in the top of the fifth.  Wilkes would then get a run back when Tay Sidler homered to left in the bottom of the fifth to make it 8-7 in favor of the visitors.  Marywood was again held in check in the top of the sixth as A.J. Mihaly got the Pacers in order, but so were the Colonels as Pelle continued to pitch well for the Pacers.

Marywood almost got an insurance run in the top of the seventh but the Colonels used a force play at the plate to keep the Pacers scoreless for the third straight inning.  The Pacers nearly let the Colonels back in the game in the bottom half if the inning, but Pelle worked his way out of a jam and Wilkes left the bases loaded to end the inning.

The Pacers needed that insurance run as in the bottom of the eighth Wilkes took advantage of a Pacers' miscue to extend the inning, and would eventually get three runs to take a 10-8 lead.  After a one-out walk, an error in the outfield allowed the Colonels to have runners on first and second.  Tyler Marino then doubled in one run, a Sidler sacrifice fly to center scored another, and Nick Craig singled in the third run of the inning.

In the top of the ninth, Pinelli hit a solo homer to left to get the Pacers back to within one, but the Pacers could not complete a comeback of their own as they left a runner stranded to end the game.

Pelle pitched 5.2 innings, allowing just one earned run while striking out four in relief.  Woytach finished the game 3-for-5 with two RBI while Downton and Pasqualichio each went 2-for-5 with an RBI.  Pinelli was 2-for-3 with a homer and three runs scored.

Marywood returns to action Friday when they open Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) play by hosting Philadelphia Biblical University in a single, nine inning game.  First pitch is set for 3:00 pm in Scranton.
