Men’s Lacrosse Edges Griffins in CSAC Opener

Gwynedd Valley, PA – Marywood University outscored Gwynedd-Mercy College 3-0 in the fourth quarter of Saturday afternoon's Colonial States Athletic Conference men's lacrosse opener on Saturday to pull away with a 9-8 win.  The Pacers improve to 4-3 on the season and 1-0 in conference play with the win while the Griffins slip to 4-4 overall and 0-1 in the CSAC.
 
Gwynedd-Mercy took the 4:04 into the first quarter on a goal by Nathan Pendleton, but Marywood equalized the score with 5:18 to play in the first quarter when Chris Riley scored off an assist from Brandon Terlizzi.  The Griffins stretched their lead to 4-2 after the first 15 minutes of play with Marcus Janda tallying for the Pacers' second goal of the game.
 
Marywood outscored the Griffins 3-1 in the second quarter to level the score at 5-apiece at halftime.  Dante Frederico cut the Pacers' deficit to 4-3 by scoring off a feed from Andrew Alberalla with 4:41 to play in the half before Alberalla knotted the score with an unassisted goal at the 2:59 mark.  Janda put Marywood ahead with an unassisted tally with 2:11 left on the clock  but the Griffins leveled the score a minute later.
 
Greg Nester put Marywood back on top with an unassisted tally at the 8:09 mark of the third quarter, but Gwynedd-Mercy again drew level with 5:38 left in the third quarter.  The Griffins tacked on two more goals to hold an 8-6 advantage heading into the final 15 minutes of play.
 
Janda scored 1:58 into the fourth quarter to bring Marywood back to within a single goal and back-to-back tallies by Riley Dobel, both assisted by Sam Trill, gave the Pacers a 9-8 lead with 8:17 left in regulation.  Marywood's defense stood tall from their as the Pacers held on for the key, early-season conference win.
 
Janda (2 goals, 1 assist) and Trill (1 goal, 2 assists) had three points to lead Marywood's attack for the day while Dobel (2 goals) and Alberalla (1 goal, 1 assist) both added two points for the Pacers.  Nicholas Cornella made 16 saves to earn his fourth win of the season while Nick Johnson collected a team-leading five groundballs for the game.
 
Craig Trueblood led Gwynedd-Mercy with four points on three goals and one assist while Roy Bakeoven added two goals for the Griffins.  Ryley O'Keefe made 12 saves in the loss for Gwynedd-Mercy, who held a 38-31 advantage in shots for the game and a 29-27 edge in groundballs.

Marywood returns home on Wednesday afternoon for a CSAC match-up against 13th ranked Cabrini College in a rematch of last year's conference championship game in which the Cavaliers prevailed 9-6.  Opening faceoff is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. on the Pacers' turf field.
