Scranton, PA - Despite a solid pitching outing from junior Michael Ciavarella, Neumann University edged host Marywood 3-1 in Colonial States Athletic Conference baseball action Tuesday afternoon in Scranton.  Ciavarella went 8.1 inning while striking out three, but Marywood managed just three hits to Neumann's 11 as the Pacers fell to 15-10 (6-4 CSAC) while the Knights, who were ranked in the top 25 for several weeks and received votes in this weeks' poll, improved to 20-9 (6-4 CSAC).

Neumann opened the scoring in the top of the first on a RBI double from Derek Etsell, but the Pacers knotted the score at 1-1 in the bottom of the second on a Dominic Loughlin groundout to second which scored Shane Miller from third.  The Knights went up 2-1 on another RBI double from Etsell in the third, and the score would remain 2-1 until the ninth when the Knights added an insurance run on an RBI double from catcher Joey Armato.

Marywood could not manage any more offense against a strong pitching staff from the Knights.  Starter Matthew Smtih went four innings and allowed one run on two hits, and was replaced by eventual winner Mike Dicken (5-1) who struck out three over 1.2 innings of work.  For the remainder of the game, Marywood had to deal with lefty Russ Gilliam, who entered with a 7-0 record and pitched the final 3.1 innings to pick up his first save of the year.  Gilliam fanned five batters and allowed just one hit.

Ciavarella had a solid outing in suffering his second loss of the season (3-2), striking out three while scattering 11 hits over 8.1 innings.  Joseph DiLoreto got the final two outs for the Pacers.

Marywood returns to the diamon Friday when they travel to Hackettstown, New Jersey to take on Centenary College at 3:00pm.
