Scranton, PA - The University of Scranton field hockey team used a stout defensive effort and a balanced offensive attack to claim its first victory of the season, a 4-0 win over Marywood University on Saturday afternoon at sun-drenched Fitzpatrick Field.  Scranton (1-1) dominated possession, outshooting Marywood, 44-9. The Royals allowed just two shots on goal in each half and limited the Pacers (0-1) to just a handful of scoring opportunities.

Scranton got a goal and assist each from Laura Megargel and Alyssa Fania.  The Royals also got goals from Gretchen Kempf and Jessica Conroy.

The Royals struck first when Conroy scored on a shot from the left point at the 18:55 mark. Less than three minutes later, Fania scored her first goal of the season on a pass from Megargel.

Scranton carried that 2-0 advantage into halftime before Megargel converted a penalty stroke for a 3-0 advantage with just under 25 minutes to play. Kempf finished the scoring with her second goal of the season off a feed from Fania as Scranton rebounded from a 2-1 overtime loss at Muhlenberg in the season opener on Friday evening.

With Scranton dominating offensively, Marywood received a strong goalkeeping effort from sophomore Natalie Winters, who made 20 stops on the day.

The victory improves Scranton to 30-6-1 all-time against Marywood.  Marywood hosts Kean University in non-conference action Wednesday night at 7:00pm.
