Pacers Suffer Pair of Setbacks at Knights Invitational

Aston, PA – Marywood University's volleyball team lost a pair of matches on the opening day of play at the Knights Invitational hosted by Neumann University of Friday.  The Pacers suffered a 3-0 setback to the host Knights in the Colonial States Athletic Conference opener for both teams in the first match before dropping a tight, five-set battle with Rutgers-Camden.  Marywood, now 6-4 on the season and 0-1 in the CSAC will look to snap a three-game losing skid on Saturday with a pair of non-conference matches.
 
Neumann used wins of 25-16, 25-17, and 25-20 to improve to 4-5 on the season (1-0 CSAC) in Friday's opener.  The Knights' attack was led by three players in double-digit kills including Katelin Kulentz (15), Kelsey D'Imperio (11), and Natalie George (10).  Cecily Scavicchio led all players with 30 assists while Victoria Limmina added a match-high 16 digs for Neumann.
 
Marywood was paced by Ashley Zalewski's eight kills while Ashley Cavellier collected five kills.  Kelly Chadwick put up 17 assists while Rachel Tollett led the Pacers with 12 digs.  Amy Kester contributed one solo block and two block assists and Kathleen Reilly added a pair of block assists of her own in the loss. 
 
In Friday's nightcap, Marywood claimed the first set 25-21 before Rutgers-Camden rallied to take a 2-1 advantage with wins of 25-19 and 26-24.  The Pacers leveled the contest with a 25-21 decision in game four, but the Scarlet Raptors, now 5-2 this fall, won the match by taking the decisive fifth set, 15-12.
 
Zalewski led Marywood with 22 kills on 36 attempts and added two blocks against Rutgers-Camden  while Kester added 15 kills and three blocks.  Sara Melick finished the match with 14 kills.    
 
Mackenzie Goodwin led the squad with 51 assists to go along with 11 digs and four aces while Tollett collected a team-high 16 digs while serving up a pair of aces.
 
Marywood will close out the Knights Invitational with a pair of non-conference matches on Saturday at Neumann.  The Pacers will open against St. Mary's College of Maryland at noon before meeting Marymount University at 4:00 p.m.
