Volleyball Downed by Penn St. Berks in Four Sets

Scranton, PA - After taking the first set handily, Marywood University volleyball dropped the next three in a 3-1 loss Thursday to Penn State Berks. The Lions won by scores of 15-25, 25-16, 27-25, 25-12 as Marywood fell to 11-8 on the season after dropping its fourth straight match.

Marywood cruised through the first set, holding the Lions to just nine kills and six errors. Penn State Berks rebounded to post a 25-16 victory in the second set. The third set went in back-and-fourth fashion, and the Pacers found themselves with a match point ahead 25-24 when Mackenzie Goodwin fooled the Lions with a reverse shot that landed inside the lines. Penn State Berks rattled off three consecutive points to go into the fourth with a 2-1 lead.

Ashley Zalewski led the Pacers with 11 kills, and Mikayla Bristol had nine kills on 36 attempts. Kelly Chadwick contributed 30 assists.

The Pacers had three players in double figures for digs. Rachel Tollett posted a team-high 27 digs. Kelly Chadwick manufactured 13 digs, and Mackenzie Goodwin yielded 12.

The Lions received double-digit attack efforts from Sophia Zhang (15) and Cassidy Schultz (13). Morgan Buterbaugh tallied a game-high 36 digs.

Marywood returns to the Insalaco Arena Saturday for its third match this week when it hosts Notre Dame (Md.) at 1:00 pm.
