Volleyball Splits Pair, Clinches No. 4 Seed in CSAC Tournament

Scranton, PA - Marywood University women's volleyball wrapped up its Colonial States Athletic Conference schedule Saturday with a split. The Pacers defeated Gwynedd Mercy University 3-0 for their season-high sixth-straight victory before falling to Neumann University in straight sets.

The Pacers lock the No. 4 seed in the CSAC playoffs, which begin Nov. 5. Marywood (17-9, 8-3 CSAC) will host either Keystone College (15-14, 4-4 CSAC) or Baptist Bible College (13-17, 6-4 CSAC) in the first round match-up. 

Marywood summoned the Griffins by scores of 25-11, 25-15, 25-6. Neumann won the nightcap by scores of 25-16, 25-16, 25-20. 

The Pacers trailed by as many as 8-3 in the first set of the Gwynedd Mercy opener. Amy Kester turned things around with a kill that led to a nine-point run on Mackenzie Goodwin's service points. Marywood built a 17-1 streak that set the tone for the rest of the match. 

In the third set, Marywood opened with a 16-1 run to start the third frame. The Pacers' 25-6 roasting ties a season-best set win, last achieved Sept. 28 against Centenary College. 

Marywood statistics from the Griffins meet are not available at press time. The Griffins' were led by Stephanie Farrar's three kills. Farrar added five kills and, Michelle Carrieri notched six digs. 

In the first two sets, Neumann broke away from a stalemates at five points. The Knights scored the first five points of the third set before Marywood cut the deficit to 6-4. Neumann claimed another five-point run to create a healthy 11-4 edge.

After Marywood called a timeout trailing 23-14, the Pacers went on a 6-1 streak to make it a 24-19 game. A service error ended Marywood's chance for a comeback and supplied Neumann with the victory. 

Ashley Zalewski led the Pacers with 12 kills on 26 attempts for a team-high .346 shooting percentage. Playing in her Senior Game, Sara Melick supplied seven kills on 19 attempts. 

Kelly Chadwick contributed 25 assists. Rachel Tollett tacked on to her career record with 18 digs. Kester assisted on three blocks. 

Katelin Kuklentz provided a double-double with 11 kills and 16 digs for the Knights. Julia Malseed added 15 digs, and Kat Wolf generated 27 assists. 

Marywood finishes its regular season Tuesday at 7:00 pm with a Think Pink game against The University of Scranton at the Insalaco Arena.
