Men's Basketball Slotted Sixth in CSAC Preseason Poll

Men's Basketball - 11/13/2013 1:48:00 PM

Aston, PA - Under the direction of first-year Head Coach Robert Simmons, Marywood University was selected sixth in the Colonial States Athletic Conference preseason coaches' poll, conference officials announced Wednesday. The Pacers earned 38 points, ahead of fellow 5-8 CSAC teams Baptist Bible College and Rosemont College.

Marywood returns its leaders in points, rebounds and steals from the 2012-13 season. Kendall Harris will make his first full season, after transferring midway through last year, and brings his 15.8 points per game and 6.2 rebounds per game to the table. Ryan Corrigan led the Pacers in total points, amassing 14.8 points per game for a season-high 371 points. Captain Shane Kellaher swiped 48 steals in 2012-13.

The four-time defending Colonial States Athletic Conference men's basketball champion Cabrini College Cavaliers were selected by the league's head coaches to claim a fifth straight title.

Cabrini received eight of the 10 first-place votes and accumulated 80 total points following a 25-6 overall record in 2012-13.

The Cavaliers secured the No. 1 seed in the 2012-13 CSAC tournament after a 16-2 mark in conference contests. Cabrini would go on to best fifth-seeded Neumann University, 90-77, in the semifinals and third-seeded Keystone College, 90-74, in the championship game to earn the CSAC's automatic bid to the NCAA tournament.

Cabrini would go on to win three NCAA tournament games over Hampden-Sydney College (80-78), Ohio Wesleyan University (84-81) and Wooster College (70-63) to advance to the Elite Eight in Salem, Va. The Cavaliers' impressive run through the tournament would end there, however, as Cabrini lost to eventual national champion and No. 2-ranked Amherst College, 101-82.

Gwynedd Mercy University received two first-place votes and garnered 68 points, good for second place in the poll. The Griffins were the No. 2 seed in last year's CSAC tournament and finished with a conference mark of 14-4. Keystone, Neumann University, Immaculata University and Marywood occupy the 3-4-5-6 spots in the poll, respectively, followed by Baptist Bible College in seventh, Rosemont College in eighth, Centenary College in ninth and Cairn University in tenth.

Marywood opens its season this weekend at the Laurel Line Tournament at Misericordia University in Dallas. The Pacers will take on the Cougars Friday. Simmons' squad will face either CSAC foe Baptist Bible or Pitt-Bradford on Saturday.
