Mang's Free Throw Seals Pacer Comeback Win

Scranton, PA – Brittany Mang sank a game-winning free throw with 4.3 seconds left to propel Marywood University to a 74-73 victory over Wilkes University in nonconference women's basketball action. The Pacers overcame a double-digit deficit to defeat the Colonels, trailing by as many as 11 points in the first half.

Mang put the Pacers (2-0) ahead after the Colonels tied the game at 73 apiece with 59 seconds remaining. The Colonels' Chelsea Brown missed a go-ahead free throw, and Mang was sent to the line on a personal foul on Chelsea Smelas. She missed the first free throw before sinking the eventual gamewinner. Mang then deflected a pass to prevent Wilkes (1-2) from getting a shot off at the buzzer.

Mang led Marywood with 22 points on a 9-for-13 shooting performance. Danielle Terranella posted her second consecutive double-double with 15 points and 12 rebounds. Ashley Murray reached double figures with 13 points.

Wilkes' largest lead – 11 points – came with 6:20 remaining in the first half. The Pacers trailed by as many as seven with 13 minutes left in the game.

The Colonels were led by Chelsea Brown's 19 points and 13 rebounds. Elena Stambone made up for a 5-for-21 shooting outing with 10-of-11 free throws for a team-high 21 points.

After trailing the entire game, Marywood took its first lead of the game from an emphatic Nora Joyce 3-pointer from the corner that stirred up the Pacer crowd at 10:36. Joyce drained three 3-point attempts for nine points.

Marywood's lead grew to as many as five points. Carly Leitzel heaved a no-look layup from underneath the basket that miraculously sunk through the net. It gave the Pacers a 68-62 advantage with 5:28 on the scoreboard.

Wilkes stormed back with a seven-point run capped by a Brown layup to regain Wilkes' lead at 70-68.

Morgann Haduck finished with six assists.

Marywood shot 39 percent (23-59) from the field and kept Wilkes to 36.6 percent. The Colonels' struggles at the charity stripe prove to be a difference maker. Wilkes made 18-of-34 free throw attempts for 52.9 percent, while Marywood made 21 on the same number of attempts.

The Pacers connected on 36.8 percent of 3-pointers, including 4-of-9 in the second half.

Marywood hosts Misericordia Tuesday at 7:00 pm.
