Men's Swimming Picks Up Historic Win Over Scranton

Scranton, PA - Marywood University's men's swimming team continued their strong start to the season as the Pacers picked up their first win over crosstown and Landmark Conference rival the University of Scranton by a score of 164-127.  The Pacers, who received votes in the latest CollegeSwimming.com National Top-25 poll, improved to 7-2 on the year and 3-0 in the Landmark while getting their first win over the Royals in four tries.  Marywood's women's team (4-6, 1-2 Landmark) fell to the Royals 193-107.

The University of Scranton's earned 11 points early with a win from their men's 200 medley relay team but the Pacers closed the gap by finishing first through third in the 1000 free.  Jason Beabout won in a time of 10:43.57 and was followed by teammates Eddie Sanborn III (10:43.78) and Kevin Drennen (11:10.37).  The Pacers would then sweep the 200 free with a first place showing from Zachary Haney (1:47.97), second place from Beabout (1:49.40) and third from Joseph Buderwitz (1:51.29).

Daniel Adams (56.73) and Brian Shanahan (57.84) helped Marywood extend their lead with a 1-2 showing in the 100 backstroke while Chris Brown had a nice third place showing in the 100 breast (1:04.20).  Ryan Widenor (2:05.94), Thomas Missal (2:09.32) and Buderwitz (2:11.51) swept the 200 butterfly for the Pacers while Anthony Pisano finished second in teh 50 free in 22.49. 

Thomas Muscarello and Peter Inirio gave the Pacers 13 points with a 1-2 finish on the 3-meter diving boards and Pisano and Adams finished 2-3 in the 100 free to extend Marywood's lead.  Haney and Shanahan would go 1-2 in the 200 backstroke while Brown again finished third in the 200 breaststroke.  Beabout, Buderwitz and Sanborn III went 1-3 in the 500 free while Widenor and Missal finished 2-3 int he 100 butterfly.  Haney helped seal the men's win with a first place finish in the 200 IM.

On the women's side, Marywood got wins from their 200 medley relay team of Catherine Anlas, Kim Petersen, Katie Paterson and Valerie Barlow.  Paterson finshed second in the 1000 free (11:28.79), less than five seconds off race winner's Kaitlyn Maloney time of 11:23.91.  Anlas won the 100 backstroke in 1:03.66 while Olivia Hower was third in 1:07.93.  Anlas again won in the 50 free (25.78) and picked up her third win in the 100 free (57.03).  Heather Wimmer won the 3-meter diving with a score of 211.60 and Tiffany Mathis finished third with a 194.25. 

Marywood returns to action next weekend when they host the United States Merchant Marine Academy Saturday, December 14 at 1:00 pm.
