Second-Half Runs Eliminate Marywood from CSAC Tournament

Gwynedd Valley, PA – Marywood University women's basketball's lone second half lead lasted all of 55 seconds. After a back-and-fourth game, it was only then that host Gwynedd-Mercy College decided to pull ahead with vigor.  Second-seeded Gwynedd-Mercy proceeded to go on a nine-point run to eliminate No. 5 Marywood from the Colonial States Athletic Conference playoffs, handing the Pacers a 68-56 loss Wednesday in the semifinal round. After the brief deficit, the Griffins outscored the Pacers 28-15 over the final 7:38 of the game.

Marywood awaits an expected ECAC tournament bid that will be revealed Monday. The Griffins meanwhile move to the CSAC final against top-seeded Cabrini College on Saturday.

Danielle Terranella posted her second double-double of the season with 11 points and 12 rebounds. Maggie Presnal led all Pacer scorers with 14 points to go with eight rebounds.

Morgann Haduck was instrumental for Marywood in the first half, finishing the game with 11 points. Brittany Mang tallied five steals.

Marywood shot 32.9 percent from the field for the game. Gwynedd-Mercy made 40 percent of its shots.

The Pacers trailed throughout the second half until Terranella picked up an offensive rebound and put the ball in the bucket for the first Marywood lead at 41-40 with 8:34 remaining.

The Griffins' Jordan Dominic hit a deep 3-pointer at 7:38 to ensure the Pacers' lead was short-lived. From there, Gwynedd-Mercy proceeded to take a nine-point run, taking a 49-41 lead with 5:43.

Lindsey Schroth hit a key three-point play to make it a four-point game with 4:25 remaining. Gwynedd-Mercy went on a 15-1 run over the next 3:34 to take an 18-point lead with under a minute to go.

Marywood led for the majority of the first half after Gwynedd-Mercy opened the game with the first eight points. The Pacers quickly landed on its feet by netting the next seven points, highlighted by an offensive rebound and a put-in by both Terranella and Presnal.

Haduck hit a running Nora Joyce on the baseline for a well-manicured layup to cut the deficit to 11-9 at 14:38.

Marywood took its first lead at the 11:49 mark when Presnal drove in from the 3-point line for a layup. Haduck drained a 3-pointer on the next possession to take an 18-13 lead.

Haduck connected on her second trey to go ahead 23-17 with 7:48 left on the clock The Griffins' Nicole Dougherty responded with a 3-pointer of her own on the succeeding possession.

Gwnedd-Mercy tied the game briefly after a six-point run. Mang stole the ball and drove the court to force a foul to go ahead 24-23. The Griffins would take the lead again on a Kristen Fuery layup 1:15 before the break. Terranella drove the lane and scored a field goal with eight seconds remaining to go into half trailing 28-27.
