Playoff Hopes Dashed in OT Loss at Neumann

Box Score

Aston, PA - Up 71-70 in overtime, Marywood University missed two free throws and Neumann converted a would-be Pacers' steal into a fast break dunk to reclaim the lead and the Knights hung on for a hard-fought, 74-71 overtime win in CSAC men's basketball action Monday evening in Aston.  The loss, Marywood's third straight, drops the Pacers to 6-16 overall and 5-10 in the CSAC, therefore eliminating Marywood from any hope of a playoff berth.  Six teams ahead of Marywood all have nine league wins, a number Marywood cannot reach with only three remaining games.  Neumann improved to 10-11 overall and 9-5 CSAC with the win.

Kendall Harris had a game-high 26 points to lead Marywood while Daniel Tintle and Ryan Corrigan each added 10 for the Pacers.  Harris came up one rebound short of a double-double after pulling down a team-high nine boards.  Rich Whitten led four Neumann players in double figures with a team-high 18 points.

A back-and-forth affair throughout, the largest lead of the game turned out to be Neumann's four-point lead over the Pacers at halftime as the Knights went into the lockerroom with a 30-26 lead.  Immediately as the second half started Marywood erased that deficit and eventually tied the game at 43-43 on a three pointer from Andrew Andrle.  The Pacers then took their first lead since the first half on a Daniel Tintle layup with 8:15 remaining, but Neumann quickly answered with a dunk at the other end to reclaim a one-point lead.

From there, the two teams traded leads and battled through several ties before Harris sunk one of two free throw attempts with just under a minute remaining to force a 60-60 tie.  Neither team could find the winning bucket in regulation, and Marywood headed to their first overtime game of the season.

After a pair of Whitten freebies gave Neumann a 62-60 lead to start overtime, Marywood went on a quick 5-0 run to take a 65-62 lead before the Knights' Reggie Coleman nailed a three to force a 65-65 tie.  After a Neumann basket and a Ian Stout layup, Marywood forced a 70-70 tie on a pair of Matt Tintle free throws.  Shane Kellaher made one of two free throws to give Marywood a 71-70 lead, but Neumann answered at the other end when Mark Blount converted a traditional three-point play to put the hosts up 73-71.  Down one, Neumann crossed midcourt before Marywood knocked the ball loose, forcing a scramble back in Marywood territory.  Whitten came up with the loose ball and threw a three-quarter court strike to Blount in the lane for an easy two.

Marywood took possession but a slip forced a turnover and Neumann went up three on another free throw from Blount before a last ditch full-court short from the Pacers fell short.

Marywood will host Neumann Wednesday night at 8:00pm.
