Men's Lacrosse Comes Up Short to Scranton in Snow

Men's Lacrosse - 3/16/2013 1:56:00 PM

Box Score

Scranton, PA - Marywood University men's lacrosse nearly overcame a five-goal deficit in the second half but ultimately fell short to cross-town rival University of Scranton 9-7 Saturday in the first-ever Electric City Classic amid snowy conditions. The Pacers outscored the Royals by a 4-2 margin in the second half and moved to 1-5 on the season following their first victory, at King's, on Wednesday.

Riley Dobel led the Pacers with five goals and a game-high six ground balls. Dylan Swope had a goal and two assists for three points. Daniel Anderson added a goal and an assist.

Marywood's Nicholas Cornella was spectacular in goal in the second half. Cornella made 13 saves and allowed nine goals.

The two teams shared nearly identical stat lines in what was an evenly matched game after the first quarter. Marywood and Scranton tied in shots (35) and saves (13). The Royals allowed one less turnover to Marywood's 16 giveaways, and the Pacers enjoyed a slight 27-25 advantage in ground balls.

Scranton's Will Mahle and Kevin Brier scored two goals apiece. Dillon McInerney had a goal and three assists. The Royals won their second straight and improve to 3-3 on the season.

The Pacers found themselves in an early bind after the Scranton offense quickly found its rhythm. The Royals tallied three goals on the board in the first half of the first quarter. Marywood didn't get past the Scranton defense until Anderson scored off a pass from Sam Trill at 3:59. The Royals added two more goals before the end of the quarter with strikes from Alec Mikrut and Kevin Brier to put the Pacers at a 5-1 disadvantage at the end of the first quarter.

Marywood and Scranton each traded a pair of two-goal runs in the second quarter.

Dobel went on a tear in the second half with four goals. Trailing 8-3, Dobel scored four of the game's final goals. He scored from a Derek Schmidt assist with 8:47 in the third period. Nearly a full quarter later, he sliced the deficit to three on a Swope-assisted goal at 11:35 remaining in the game.

A costly illegal body check penalty provided the Royals with a score that provided a well-needed insurance goal from Taylor Nelson at the 7:05 mark. Immediately following the Nelson score, Marywood converted a beautifully orchestrated string of plays on both sides of the field. Brandon Terlizzi caused a turnover that was picked up by Joe O'Connell. Greg Nester fired a shot on point when Dobel caught the rebound and pitched it into the net.

Dobel added his fifth goal with 37 seconds remaining. His five goals match both a career best, last set on April 28, 2012 against Rosemont, and a program high (completed eight times).

The Pacers' John Werner led the game with three caused turnovers.

Marywood returns to action Wednesday when it travels to York College of Pennsylvania for a 4 p.m. start. The Pacers' next home game in Scranton is April 3 against Rosemont College at 4 p.m.
