Hornets' Fast Start Haunts Marywood in 13-10 Loss

Winchester, VA - Shenandoah University used a 6-1 run in the first quarter to defeat Marywood University men's lacrosse 13-10 Saturday. The Pacers crawled back by outscoring the Hornets 6-4, including a 6-2 streak, in the second half.

Brandon Terlizzi built off his success in the circle from the season opener, winning 15-of-23 faceoffs and gathering a team-high eight ground balls. Dylan Swope and Ryan Nowell each picked up six ground balls for the Pacers (0-2).

Sam Trill led Marywood with four goals and five ground balls. Riley Dobel netted two goals, and Swope added a goal and two assists.

Nowell tied for the game high with four caused turnovers. Marywood goalkeeper Nicholas Cornella made eight saves in goal.

The Pacers outshot the Hornets (3-0) by a 48-33 margin and held a 25-21 advantage in shots on goal. Marywood won 17-of-26 (65 percent) of faceoff opportunities. Shenandoah held a slight 54-49 edge in ground balls.

Dobel scored the game's first goal 57 seconds into regulation off a pass from Cody Bachman. Shenandoah proceeded to rattle off six of the next seven goals to end the first quarter with a 6-2 lead. Dobel ended the drought with a score 31 seconds into the second quarter.

Ahead 9-4 at the break, Shenandoah scored the first two goals of the second half to take a seven-goal lead. Swope changed the game's momentum in the Pacers' favor with a goal from Derek Schmidt at the 9:50 mark of the third, beginning a three-goal run capped by a Nick Lucchesi tally from Swope.

Trill posted a man-up goal from Terlizzi to cut the deficit to three with 10:33 remaining in the game. The Hornets responded with a man-up goal from Matt Justice at 8:25. Trill found the back of the net again with 4:39 remaining to cut the led to three again at 13-10. Shenandoah held Marywood without a goal for the remainder of the contest.

Marywood's Spring Break trip to the Blue Ridge Mountains region continues Wednesday when the Pacers face No. 3 Lynchburg College at 7 p.m. in Lynchburg, Va.
