Scranton, PA - Catcher Chris Ortiz went 3-for-5 with three RBI and Marywood University held off a ninth inning rally from visiting Immaculata University as the Pacers edged the Mighty Macs 8-7 for a CSAC win Wednesday afternoon in Scranton.  Marywood went into the ninth with a four-run lead but Immaculata made things interesting with a three-run frame before the Pacers picked up the win.  Marywood moves to 9-16 (2-10 CSAC) with the victory while the Mighty Macs fell to 12-16 (5-9 CSAC).

Immaculata opened the scoring with three unearned runs in the first inning thanks to two Pacer errors on the same play.  Marywood quickly answered with a four run bottom half of the inning.  After a pair of walks and a single loaded the bases for Ortiz, the senior tripled to left center to clear the bases and tie the game at 3-3. Ortiz would then score on a RBI groundout from Zack Klien to put Marywood up one, 4-3.

The Pacers added to that lead with a pair of two run innings in the third and fifth to go up 8-4.  In the third, Klien picked up another RBI with a single to score Ortiz and a Stephen Gaylets double to right scored Klien.  In the fifth, a fielder's choice bunt RBI from Mike Diskin scored Marywood's seventh run and a bases loaded walk scored Marywood's final run of the game.

In the seventh, the Mighty Macs got one back with a sacrifice fly from Matt Hardy but Marywood starter Joseph DiLoreto got out of the jam by forcing a lineout to centerfield.  DiLoreto (3-1) went seven full innings and struck out two while allowing five runs (four earned) in the win.

After a scoreless eighth, Immaculata made things intesting in their last at-bat and final out.  After a strikeout and a groundout, Matt Lawson doubled down the leftfield line to keep the Mighty Macs alive.  Back-to-back walks by Marywood's Russell Baldino loaded the bases, and Michael Lascomb doubled down the rightfield line to score all three baserunners and cut the Marywood lead to 8-7.  Baldino settled down and got Joe DiGiaimo looking to end the game.

Bryan McHale (3-3) took the loss for the Mighty Macs who got a strong performance from their bullpen.  Kirk Wenzler (1.2 innings pitched), Josh Pedorenko and Nicholas Campione allowed just four Marywood hits in the final 3.2 innings of work on the mound to keep Immaculata in the game.

Ortiz led Marywood with a 3-for-5, three RBI effort which included a triple.  Daniel Hull, Gaylets and David Maione all had multiple hit games for the Pacers.  Lascomb went 2-for-4 with three RBI for Immaculata.

Marywood returns to action Friday with a trip to Langhorne to take on Cairn University at 3:00 p.m. in CSAC action.
