Overturned Goal Costs Pacers Chance at Overtime

Scranton, PA - An illegal stick wiped out a potential game-tying goal that gave Susquehanna University a 10-9 victory over Marywood University Wednesday in non-conference men's lacrosse action. Susquehanna's John Kerrigan's goal with 4:15 in the fourth broke a 9-9 tie and proved to be the game-winning score.

The drama occurred when Marywood's Brandon Terlizzi tied the game at 10 apiece with 2.3 seconds left on a beautifully orchestrated pass from Dylan Swope. Susquehanna called a stick check on Terlizzi during the succeeding faceoff, and the referees called a stick-check violation that warranted an unsportsmanlike penalty. According to the NCAA men's lacrosse rulebook Rule 5.5, the stick-check violation negated the player's previous goal and Susquehanna held on to a 10-9 lead for the waning moments of the game.

Marywood's Nicholas Cornella made 21 saves in net. Riley Dobel scored two goals and an assist for three points. Sam Trill and Scott Slater each supplied two goals for the Pacers (3-10).

Swope led with four points on a goal and three assists. Terlizzi gathered a team-high four ground balls. Derek Schmidt had a goal and two assists for three points. Joe O'Connell had three caused turnovers.

Terlizzi's would-be goal would have sent the Pacers into overtime after trailing by as many as four goals in the second half. Faced with an 8-4 disadvantage with eight minutes remaining in the third period, Greg Nester sparked a five-goal run that gave Marywood a lead over the Crusaders (9-5)in the fourth.

Swope tied the game at 8-8 on a Dobel connection, and Slater put the Pacers ahead 9-8 on a goal from Schmidt with 9:53 to go.

Susquehanna's Austen Lein – who finished with five points – evened the score less than a minute later from Greg Rabiecki. Lein then assisted Kerrigan on the game-winning goal.

The Crusaders outshot the Pacers by a 39-31 mark. Each team finished with 22 ground balls, and Susquehanna edged Marywood 12-11 at the faceoff circle. Marywood went 18-for-22 on clearing opportunities, while Susquehanna struggled in the second half to wind up with a 14-for-20 stature. The Pacers committed 27 turnovers to the Crusaders' 19.

Marywood concludes its regular season at home against Immaculata University on Saturday and Centenary College on April 25. Both contests begin at 4:00 pm.
