Mid-Game Rally Lifts Marywood Over Cairn

Langhorne, PA - Visiting Marywood University scored nine of their 11 runs in innings five through seven as the Pacers downed host Cairn University 11-7 in Colonial States Athletic Conference baseball action Friday afternoon in Langhorne. Marywood (10-16, 3-10 CSAC) got four RBI from Chris Ortiz and three hits from four different players in the win.  Cairn fell to 5-23, 0-12 CSAC with the loss.

The host Highlanders took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first on an RBI double, but Marywood tied the game at 1-1 in the third on a sacrifice fly from Erik Pulkkinen that scored Mike Diskin.  Cairn went up 2-1 in the bottom half of the frame before Marywood exploded for nine runs in innings five through seven to take command.

In the fifth, a pair of walks and a single loaded the bases for Ortiz, who promptly hit a grand-slam, the first of his career.  Cairn got two back in the bottom of the fifth to make it 5-4 Marywood, but the Pacers used a two-run sixth and a three run seventh to go up 10-4. 

Thomas Richard's two-run double in the sixth scored both Marywood runs and in the seventh the Pacers took advantage of a passed ball to score a run before Diskin and Jonathan Woytach picked up RBI singles.

Michael Ciavarella improved to 2-3 on the mound for the season after getting the win.  Ciavarella went five full innings, allowing four runs on nine hits while striking out five.  Timothy Sroka pitched a scoreless sixth before Rene Muriel pitched the final three innings for Marywood, allowing three runs on four hits.

The Pacers and Highlanders will close out their three-game set with a doubleheader tomorrow in Scranton starting at noon.
