Bethlehem, PA - Marywood University volleyball split its first two games of the season Friday at the Greyhound Premiere Invitational. The Pacers defeated Ursinus College 3-0 before falling to hosts Moravian College 3-2 in the Pool A championship.
The Pacers ousted Ursinus by scores of 25-21, 25-15 and 25-18 to cruise to a victory. The Pacers committed just six errors and held on to a .307 attack percentage. Marywood forced the Bears into making 35 errors with an attack percentage of .018.
Ashley Zalewski and Amy Kester each supplied seven kills against Ursinus. Kelly Chadwick recorded 27 assists. Rachel Tollett notched 21 digs, and Kester made a game-high three blocks.
Moravian outlasted the Pacers in the fifth set to earn a 23-25, 25-16, 25-20, 23-25, 15-9 win in an evenly contested match for a spot in Saturday's championship flight. Marywood recorded its lowest attack percentage (.158) of the day in the fifth set.
The Greyhounds held a 70-48 advantage in kills over the Pacers. Zalewski had 14 kills, and Mikayla Bristol pitched in with 10. Chadwick assisted on 45 shots.
Defensively, Marywood held a significant advantage over the Greyhounds by a 96-46 margin in defensive digs, led by Tollett's match-high 36. Chadwick had 13 digs, and Ashley Cavellier tabbed 12.
Marywood advances to the Gold Bracket Saturday when it will face Alvernia University at 10:00 am and Wilkes University at 2:00 pm.
