Shooting Woes Trouble Pacers in 63-49 Loss at Centenary

Hackettstown, NJ – Marywood University came out of a weeklong hiatus with a cold shooting display in a 63-49 loss Wednesday at Centenary College in a Colonial States Athletic Conference women's basketball matchup. The Pacers never held a share of the lead against the Cyclones.

Marywood drops to 12-6 overall and 7-2 in the CSAC. The Pacers fall one spot in the CSAC standings to fourth place behind Neumann University. Centenary College advances to 5-4 in the CSAC with a 7-11 overall record to stay in seventh place.

Nora Joyce was the lone Pacer in double figures with 11 points on a 6-for-6 performance from the free-throw line. Joyce also handled seven rebounds. Brittany Mang contributed defensively with a team-high eight rebounds and four steals.

Maddie Lavery and Danielle Terranella both produced eight points.

The Pacers found no match for the Cyclones' Mallory George. George notched a double-double with 20 points and 13 rebounds. Her teammates Jessie Sharr (12 points) and Klarissa Perry (11) were both a rebound away from a double-double of their own.

Both team struggled to score in the early going, and Marywood fleetingly tied the contest on a four-point run with 2:30 gone in the game. The stalemate would last only fleetingly. The Cyclones went on a 17-5 run over the next seven minutes to take a 21-9 lead.

Marywood would only come within single digits on two occasions during the course of the game. A Kimmy Green free throw sliced the deficit to nine at 27-18 with 8:19 in the first half. Ally Fugnitti's three on the next possession would ignite a six-point run that carried through until halftime. The Pacers came out of the break with field goals on its first two possessions of the second half to make it a 38-29.

The Pacers were never able to gain any sort of momentum, and the Cyclones quickly sprouted an eight-point run that put Marywood to a 17-point hole. Marywood was able to keep Centenary scoreless during the final 3:12 but could not bring the deficit down to single digits again.

Marywood shot just 23.4 percent from the field for the game to Centenary's 35.8 percent. The Pacers did not find rhythm from long distance, only making 2 of 14 shots for a season-low 14.3 percent.

Centenary won the rebound game 55-45 and doubled the Pacers' production in the paint. Marywood turned the tides on its poor free-throw performance with 17-of-23 made for 73.9 percent.

Marywood hosts an amicable foe Saturday at 1:00 pm when it takes on defending CSAC champion Cabrini College in a battle of probably playoff teams.
