Scranton, PA – For the second straight year, Marywood University and King's College men's lacrosse played to a low-scoring early season affair. But unlike last year's program-low 10 combined goals scored last season in a Pacer win, the Monarchs went out on top in an 8-5 victory over Marywood Wednesday amid brutally cold temperatures at Pacers Turf field.

Three-straight second half Monarch goals proved to be too much of a burden for the Pacers. Marywood scratched their way back from a three-goal deficit to cut it to a 5-4 deficit before King's run over a 9:34 span.

Marywood was led by Sam Trill's two goals. Dylan Swope and Stephen Deiner added a goal and an assist for a two-point effort. Derek Schmidt both added one score.
Making his second start in goal, Joe Magargal finished with 13 saves.

Defensively, John Werner registered four caused turnovers. Michael Squillante added three caused turnovers. Schmidt led the team with four ground balls.

The two teams spent the first nine minutes in a continuous deadlock before Marshall Hardy scored on a Mike O'Brien pass to five the Monarchs a 1-0 lead. It was short-lived once Swope scored 79 seconds later at the five-minute mark to even the game 1-1.

King's went ahead again at the 10:53 mark in the second period on a Kevin Sweeney pass from O'Brien.

A series of events turned a near catastrophe into a King's third goal. After goalkeeper Brendan McCrudden made two tough saves at his end, the Monarchs found themselves in a quandary with the time clicking on a clear attempt and no open King's players available. McCrudden decided to take it himself but was pounced at the midline by two Pacer defenders. With McCrudden racing back to the net to avoid an empty net goal, King's Kierhan McMahon intercepted a cross-field pass and took it all the way to the net to supply his team with a 3-1 lead at 5:50.

Trill sliced the lead in half to 3-2 from a Deiner pass. But the Monarchs added another with five seconds on the clock to goal into the break with a 4-2 lead.

O'Brien added his third point to extend the lead to three goals 50 seconds into the second half. Schmidt and Deiner teamed up to score twice within three minutes of each other, making it a 5-4 Monarch lead with 8:54 left in the third period. King's success at the faceoff circle enabled Pat Bonnot to score 53 seconds later.

King's penalty killing was effective, holding off a two-man down situation in the beginning of the fourth period. Trill added his second score on a Swope pass with a man-up situation to make it 8-5 with 8:47 left.

Marywood went 1-for-3 on extra-man  opportunities. King's was unsuccessful on both of its tries.

King's outshot the Pacers 30-22. Marywood held a 22-18 ground ball advantage. The Monarchs won 10 of 17 faceoffs. The Pacers' best success came from Squillante. Squillante won 5-of-9 faceoff tries.

Marywood face its former coach Mic Grant Saturday at Bridgewater College for its Spring Break trip. The Pacers will then embark to Ashland, Va. to take on Randolph-Macon College Wednesday.
