Scranton, PA – Three goals scored late in the fourth period turned a stalemate into an 8-5 victory for The University of Scranton over Marywood University Tuesday at Fitzpatrick Field. The loss marks the fifth straight season the Royals defeated the Pacers by four or fewer goals.

Marywood received two goals from Riley Dobel. Derek Schmidt was the only other multi-point scorer with two assists. Sam Trill, Brandon Terlizzi and Cody Bachman each provided a goal for the Pacers.

Ryan Nowell had an outstanding game defensively with six ground balls and a caused turnover.

Joe Magargal made 13 saves in goal.

With the scored tied at five midway through the fourth period, the Royals (3-2) went on the attack and John Gregitis came through with 6:35 to play. Just less than three minutes and an unsuccessful power play later, Alex Mikrut scored for a two-goal lead. Brian Quinn provided the insurance goal 40 seconds later at 3:05.


Both teams started out defensive-minded, and Scranton provided the first goal with 1:33 left in the first period. The Pacers played catch up from that point and did not get on the scoreboard until 21 minutes into the game when Dobel relayed a Michael Squillante pass into the net to cut the two-goal deficit in half at 8:33. Scranton's Matt Tibbitts padded the lead with eight seconds left in the first half.

Marywood (2-4) added the first two goals of the second half to tie the game at 3-3. Trill teamed up with Schmidt (11:39) and Terlizzi netted a Dylan Swope assisted pass at 6:33 in the third. From then on, the Pacers and Royals traded goals for nearly a full period. Bachman made it 4-4 with 19 seconds left in the third.

Schmidt assisted Dobel's second goal to tie it at 5-5 with 10:36 on the clock.

Scranton dominated the circle, winning 14 of 17 faceoff opportunities. Marywood went 17-for-22 on clears to the Royals' 13-for-19 mark.

Neither team was very effective in extra-man opportunities. Marywood received its only man-up goal in four tries from Terlizzi, and Scranton did not make good use of its five power plays.

Scranton held a 36-28 advantage in ground balls and outshot the Pacers 35-22.

Marywood stays home to host Lebanon Valley College Saturday at 1:00 pm.
