Holiday Classic to Play for Gray to Support King's Coach

Women's Basketball - 1/2/2015 1:40:00 AM

Scranton, PA - The Marywood University women's basketball team will be hosting a Play for Gray event this weekend to support King's College coach Brian Donoghue in his fight against brain cancer. The Pacers are hosting the Sleep Inn Holiday Classic Saturday and Sunday at the Insalaco Arena.

King's joins Mount Aloysius College and Keystone College in the two-day tournament with games at 2:00 and 4:00 pm each day.

Gray is the color synonymous with brain cancer awareness. Donoghue was diagnosed with Stage 3 brain cancer in 2013. The Holiday Classic will raise funds to help the Donoghue family, including Brian's wife Andrea and three young children.

Teams will be wearing gray socks and pre-game t-shirts. Profits from a 50/50 collection and a donation tin at the gate will go towards the campaign.

Marywood joins the list of athletic departments to participate in the Play for Gray cause with financial and moral support for Donoghue.

King's sports information director Bob Ziadie said Donoghue does not let the disease stop him from doing his job and that he has never missed a practice or game.

On Saturday, Marywood and King's match up at 2:00 pm, followed by a Mount Aloysius-Keystone contest at 4:00 pm. The Monarchs take on the Giants in the first game Sunday, and Marywood hosts Mount Aloysius to round out the tournament.

Marywood comes into the game with a 4-4 overall record after defeating Misericordia University 63-47 in its final contest of 2014.
