Pacers' Toil With Lions Falls Short in Four Sets

Scranton, PA – Marywood University hung on with Penn State Berks but ultimately fell in four sets Thursday in nonconference volleyball action. The Pacers lost by scores of 25-21, 25-11, 24-26, 26-24.
 
Mallorie Deschaine led the Pacers both offensively and defensively with 10 kills, 20 digs and three service aces. Meghan Weeks contributed at the net with nine kills, three block assists, and an attack percentage of .333.
 
Danielle DeIulio enjoyed an outstanding evening with 28 assists. DeIulio's misdirection credited for five kills on 10 attempts, in addition to four digs and two block assists.
 
Time after time, Amanda Khozouri sacrificed her body in a 17-dig effort. Shayna Finn provided 14 digs.
 
Addie Parsons was electric for the Lions with 20 kills and 65 attacks. Megan DeAbreu led with 27 digs from the libero spot, and Cassidy Schultz garnered 18 digs. Corinne Watson provided 29 assists.
 
Marywood recorded 10 total team blocks. The Pacers shot .080 for the game, compared to the Lions' .101 mark.
 
The Pacers trailed 20-22 late in a back-and-forth first set. Penn State Berks closed out the set with three of the final four points. The second set did not fare well for the Pacers. Marywood shot minus-.071 for the set, and convexly the Lions committed only one attack error.
 
After falling behind three early, Marywood climbed back with five straight points off Khozouri serves to take a 16-15 lead. The third set was at a standstill at 24 apiece until Khozouri put the Pacers ahead with a kill from DeIulio. A ball handling error by Cassidy Schultz prolonged the match to four sets. Marywood shot .108 in the set.
 
Marywood trailed as much as 15-9 in the fourth set before making its comeback. Five straight points off Besecker serves pinned the match at 20-19 in the Lions' favor. Penn State Berks had match point at 24-21; however, Deschaine slammed a kill to start a three-point run. DeIulio misdirected an assist for a score, and Deschaine followed with kill No. 10. A two-handed ball-handling error and a Schultz service ace ended the Pacers' chance at extending the match to five.
 
Marywood stays home to face Cairn University Saturday at 1:00 pm.
