Scranton, PA – Marywood University earned a crucial three-set victory over Gwynedd Mercy University Saturday to clear its path toward a Colonial States Athletic Conference volleyball berth. The Pacers won by scores of 25-22, 25-17, 28-26.

Mallorie Deschaine led the Pacers with 15 kills and just three errors on 40 attacks. Deschaine also provided seven digs and two blocks.

Shayna Finn led defensively with 18 digs, and Amanda Khozouri tacked on 14 digs. Danielle DeIulio set 23 assists. Lauren Besecker lent a hand on four of the eight Marywood blocks.

Gwynedd Mercy was led by Lauren Tressel and Jessica Behr's eight kills. Laura Kirk garnered 15 digs.

The victory puts Marywood into fifth place with a tiebreaker over Notre Dame of Maryland University. The Pacers are a half-game behind Immaculata University to host a CSAC first round game. The Mighty Macs host Marywood next Saturday.

The first set was a close affair with the Pacers holding their water until a Behr kill gave the Griffins a short-lived lead at 20-19. Khozouri racked up two service aces to start a four-point run, and Marywood closed it out on a ball-handling error.

The second set proved to be a sloppy display of volleyball. Both teams combined for just 13 kills and 19 errors. Leading 13-12, Marywood went on a six-point run that was highlighted by a solo block from DeIulio.

The third set went in Marywood's favor on eight straight points off Khozouri serves. Deschaine made three consecutive kills as the Pacers raced to an 8-2 lead. But Gwynedd Mercy charged back and took one of its few leads of the match on a pair of Tressel kills. Three points away letting a third set slip by, Marywood came back from its 22-20 deficit on two Besecker aces. Just after Behr tied the match at 26-26, Deschaine slammed home a shot from DeIulio to take a one-point lead. Khozouri closed the victory on a kill from Finn.

Marywood honored seniors Stacy Griffing, Maddie Lavery and Amanda Khozouri prior to today's game.

The Pacers travel to Cedar Crest College Wednesday.
