Pacers Give Mastroianni First Win as Marywood Coach in Opener

Dunmore, PA - Connor Callejas had 22 points to lead four Pacers in double figures as Marywood University's men's basketball team got new Head Coach Enrico Mastroianni his first win on the sideline as the Pacers trounced PSU Worthington Scranton 93-78 in the season opener for both squads Saturday afternoon.

Callejas' team-high 22 came on 6 of 12 shooting from the floor with a 5 of 9 effort from long range.  Kendall Harris (15 points), Shane Letthand (13) and Tip Swartz (11) all reached double figures as well for Marywood (1-0).  Dixon Hasiin led all scorers with 27 for the hosts while Kyle Kelly added 16.

Marywood built a 15 point (49-34) lead a the break by shooting over 43% from the floor and over 55% from three point range, while limiting Penn State to 35% shooting and just 36% (4 of 11) from beyond the arc.

Despite dropping off a little in the second half, Marywood still managed to make 50% of their three's (17 of 34) for the game.  The Pacers also created 12 turnovers while only committing seven of their own.

The game was tight through the first nine minutes of play with Marywood holding a slim 20-18 lead with 11 minutes to go in the opening half.  A four-point play from Letthand in the 10:45 mark gave Marywood a five point cushion, and the Pacers never let the hosts back to within three from there.

Up 30-27 with 6:07 to go in the first, Marywood went on a 8-0 run to break the game open.  The Pacers extended their lead to 12 twice over the next two minutes until Callejas nailed a three with 22 seconds left to put Marywood up 15.

Marywood's bench out-scored that of the Lions 20-5 in the opening half.

A quick 9-0 run over the opening four minutes of the second half stretched Marywood's lead to 24 (58-34).  The hosts clawed all the way back to a seven point deficit with six minutes left (67-60) but ran out of gas as the Pacers bumped their lead back up to a double-digit cushion for all but one remaining possession of the second half.

Marywood is back in action Tuesday when they travel to Lehman to take on Penn State Wilkes-Barre.
