Scranton, PA - Visiting Gwynedd Mercy University handed Marywood University their first loss of the season, 83-58, in the CSAC opener for both schools, Tuesday evening in Scranton.  The Griffins improved to 2-3 overall while Marywood (3-1) got a game-high 20 points from Kendall Harris and 19 from Connor Callejas in the loss.

After racing out to a 17-9 lead, neither team could convert anything for the next two and a half minutes of play, with Gwynedd's 17th point breaking up a scoreless streak for both teams that would have extended well over four minutes. A pair of free throws from Julian Hyden extended the Griffins lead to 10 (19-9), and the visitors held Marywood off the board for 6:23 in all until James Curley hit his first of back-to-back three's.

The Pacers intensified their defensive pressure and made it an eight point game (30-22) with 3:47 to go in the half, but the Griffins extended their lead back out to 12 by the break by out-scoring Marywood 10-6 over the final three minutes of the half.

With 14:25 to go in the second, Darnell Artis took the ball and sliced through the lane for a lay-in giving him 1,000 for his career at Gwynedd Mercy.

Gwynedd would lead by as many as 27 in the second half and led Marywood by over 20 for the final 10:21 of the game.

Marywood was just 17-57 (29.8%) from the floor for the game and hit just seven of 26 long range attempts (26.9%).  Gwynedd Mercy hit 54.7% of their shots from the floor (29 of 53) and also hit seven three's.  The Griffins dominated the boards, 45-28, with 35 defensive boards to limit the Pacers' second chance point attempts.

Marywood will host the Cross County Challenge this weekend, taking on Wilkes Saturday and King's Sunday at 3:00 pm each day.
